Nella Larson’s Passing Essay Directions

· The Job is to write out an essay arguing this thesis: Passing shows that a public biracial identity is difficult to embrace in oneself.

· If you feel you can expand on this, make it seem more accurate, or specific please do so.

· Use at least 3 quotes to help argue this point from the book Passing, by Nella Larson.

· Then in this project we must have 2 outside academic journals as sources to help prove our point. I have attached two articles titled “Academic Journal 1,” and “Academic Journal 2.” You must take a quote from each journal to help the argument, that has to do with the thesis idea

· All quotes should be analyzed and properly set up

· I would like 5 Pages for the report

The following are tips that my teacher wrote about integrating sources (this is copy pasted onto here). Just here if this helps you.

Integrating Sources

You have three options when integrating secondary sources into your paper: direct quotation, paraphrase, and summary. You should use an attributive phrase to introduce a direct quote from the source in one sentence and follow that up with a sentence in which you explain the quote. Use the following templates to help you with this.

To Introduce a Quote: According to Wyatt, …

In Wyatt’s view…

To Explain a Quote: In other words, Wyatt believes…

Wyatt’s point is that…

Finally, for each direct quote from a source, you should write 2-3 sentences in which you respond to the author’s point by agreeing, disagreeing, or some combination of both. Be sure to explain WHY you agree, disagree, or agree and disagree. Use one of the following templates:

Agree: Wyatt is surely right about…because…

Disagree: By focusing on…, Wyatt overlooks the deeper problem of…

Ok, But: Wyatt makes a good point about … , but her claim that … is questionable because . . .

**But, your goal isn’t simply to repeat what all other critics have already said in your own research paper; you also need a topic to consider in terms of your interpretation of the novel (potentially something to include in either a subject or a focus of the thesis). Your topic is going to be ‘bigger’ than your novel, so educate yourself in that topic and apply that insight back to your novel; essentially, you want to make an interesting connection.
