Running head: ANNOTATED PLUS OUTLINE 1

ANNOTATED PLUS OUTLINE ASSIGNMENT-PSYCHOLOGY 3

Please see the embedded comments below in your annotated bibliography & outline. I want to make sure you are on track to do well on the paper. Below are some important points to help ensure your paper meets the requirements. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS:

Make sure you read the instructions for the synthesis paper AND the rubric that will be used to grade it, very carefully. Note from the instructions that the two main components of the content of your paper should be:

1. A statement of common themes addressed in each of the articles.

2. A statement of the conclusions that can be drawn when the articles are taken together as a single entity. What is the overall message of the group of articles? Focus specifically on the key aspects of Freudian thought which caused these other theorists to distance themselves from Freud's views and influence. Consider also the major differences among themselves which caused them to diverge from one another.

As specified in the outline, YOUR PAPER WILL BE DISCUSSING AND SYNTHESIZING 3 COMMON THEMES. EACH THEME YOU DISCUSS SHOULD BE COMMON TO AT LEAST 3 ARTICLES ASSIGNED FOR MODULES 5 THROUGH 7 (YOU WILL NEED TO READ AHEAD). This includes Scaturo, D. J. (2005); Hall, C. S., & Lindzey, G. (1957); Axelrod, S. D. (2012); Weaver, Y. (2009); Overskeid, G. (2007); and Eagle, M. N. (2007). EACH THEME MUST INCLUDE SUPPORT FROM AT LEAST THREE OF THESE ARTICLES

Make sure you follow all APA formatting guidelines, and that your paper is ORGANIZED correctly. Specifically, your paper must have the following:

1. A TITLE PAGE, correctly formatted

2. An INTRODUCTION. DO NOT put “INTRODUCTION” as a heading of your introduction. Instead put the title of your paper, centered, and not bolded or underlined. In your introduction the opening few sentences should “hook” the reader (capture their interest). Then you should provide context for the paper. This is where you will set up what your paper is about, and bring the reader up to speed on the topic and your paper’s relevance to it. THIS IS ALSO WHERE YOU SHOULD WORK IN A STATEMENT OF COMMON THEMES. Finally, the introduction MUST include a CLEARLY STATED THESIS STATEMENT. A Thesis Statement should be as clear and specific as possible, and have a definable, arguable claim. It does not simply announce a topic, it is the point you are making and should reflect the conclusion you come to as a result of the synthesis.

3. SECTIONS. You should have a separate section for each common theme you identify. EACH SECTION (including the conclusion) SHOULD HAVE A CENTERED AND BOLDED SECTION HEADING (level 1). Remember that the point of this paper is to synthesize. Basically synthesis is combining. It is kind of like combining two elements to form a compound in chemistry. Two components combine/react to form something new. You need to synthesize (blend) the discussion of the information coming from the articles. DO NOT simply summarize information from the articles; use the articles to support your argument. Also, as indicated in the outline you should be providing a synthesis in The CONCLUSION SECTION. You need to consider the themes together as one and come up with an overall synthesized conclusion. I have included some helps at the end of these instructions that explain synthesis, if you are unfamiliar with it. Remember, A SYNTHESIS IS NOT SIMPLY SUMMARIZING OR RECAPPING INFORMATION FROM THE ARTICLES, OR RESTATING THEMES. Besides providing a synthesis, the conclusion should also make the paper come full circle. Therefore it should align with the thesis statement, showing that it has been supported. Clearly reacquaint the reader with the claim you are making, and briefly review the major points of the paper. Reaffirm and emphasize the synthesized conclusion you have arrived at, based on the synthesis of themes.

4. REFERENCES & CITATIONS. Make sure the information you include is properly supported with citations of the sources throughout your paper (in this case the sources are the assigned articles from modules one through four). There should be a reference for every source cited in your paper. Make sure your in-text citations, references, and the references page are correctly formatted according to APA guidelines.

The last thing I want you to focus on is writing mechanics (sentence structure, grammar, etc..). This especially is something a tutor could help with (along with APA formatting) if necessary. Please proofread, and if you can, get someone else to proofread your paper as well.

Also, please take a look at, and familiarize yourself with, the rubric that will be used for grading so you can keep those elements in mind as you compose your paper.

Annotated plus Outline Assignment-Psychology

n.a. (n.d). Social Psychological Theories: Addler, Fromm, Horney, Sullivan.

The first article focuses on the social psychological theories. The existence and prosperity of man find its development from the interaction with the natural environment. The article provides a deeper comprehension of the relationship between personality and society around man. Man develops a specific personality because of the interactions with the members of the society. The article provides information about the history of psychology towards comprehending the personality of man. It begins with the psychoanalytic theory provided by Sigmund Freud and its drawbacks. The psychoanalytic theory is seen to base its explanation on sexual needs which is not the case for the other theories by Adler, From, Horney, and Sullivan. The study uses different members of the society to provide a deeper comprehension of the area of interest.

Concerning the social psychological theories, the social environment serves as the building block for the situation. The four theories have created a significant investment on the connection between social dimensions and personality (n.a, n.d). Social dimensions are seen to be superior to biological dimensions. Eric Fromm focuses on the dynamics of a specific society that influence a specific character due to existing needs and values. Karen Horney dwells upon intimate factors that shape personality. Sullivan has the same approach as the perception of Horney. Sullivan provides information about the early development of man. He talks of the developmental stages as critical in influencing personality.

Weaver, Y. (2009). Mid-life--a time of crisis or new possibilities?. Existential Analysis: Journal of the Society for Existential Analysis, 20(1), 1-11.

Weaver (2009) presents a clear data on the relationship between knowledge of our environments, our behavioral maturity, and emotional development. The discussion occurs on the perception regarding the mid-life crisis that acts as an emotional state focusing on doubt and anxiety. The article provides reasons for individuals becoming uncomfortable when they realize that their life is somehow half over. The midlife crisis is a phase in life with stress and depression and includes re-evaluation and reflection of achievements made by individuals during their entire life. The mid-life crisis occurs from 35 to 40 years and may last more than ten years depending on the personality of an individual. Freud is the centerpiece of the article.

The article contrasts the perception of Sigmund Freud on the middle age. It also looks into the work of individuation by Carl Jung. Roger’s study on personal growth and the Frankl’s idea regarding means are also significant components in influencing a deeper comprehension of the middle age. The explanations created by Peck and Erickson’s are also made to ensure relevance of the middle period in lifespan development. In accordance with the data derived from the article, it is crucial to present arguments that make sense about the thinking and behavior of individuals in the middle age. The article tries to explain that the middle age should not be seen as a point of crisis rather than a normal period that individuals have to go through in life.

Scaturo, D. (1995). Transference, countertransference, and resistance: Unconscious determinants of dilemmas. American Psychological Association, 1-18.

Emotional development and maintenance serve as the backbone of transference, countertransference, and resistance when it comes to the application of therapy. A patient depicts a specific moving background towards a therapist that may determine the methods that need employment in such a situation. A therapist may show a reaction towards the patient. This is known as countertransference. It is meant to comprehend the issues surrounding a patient and developing a positive way forward. Resistance revolves around the opposite force that is against the two topics discussed above that develops from the psychotherapeutic model used between a patient and a therapy. Transference may exist as a way through which an individual likes to protect his/her inner feelings. It depends on the concept of personal relationships with the therapy to initiate positive developments.

Clinical dilemmas are created when the patient fails to believe in the successful development of a therapeutic framework (Scaturo, 1995). Such an individual may find it hard to talk unless one gets used to the therapist. However, countertransference allows both the patient and the therapist to communicate without a problem and come to an understanding of possible ways to help each other. The situation influences the development of resistance which has a relation to the process of therapy which is given to the patient for a positive outcome of mental health. Therefore, it is essential to look at the three issues raised by the articles as they are instrumental in developing a well-defined treatment method.

· Introduction

A. Social psychology theories are important in comprehending personality and behavior. The human environment has a crucial role in influencing human thinking, emotional background, and behavioral composition.

B. As social psychology theories’ scholars, B.F Skinner and Sigmund Freud offer a deep perception of this significant area of interest through their psychoanalytic models. Differences are provided pertaining their work. Overskeid (2007) provides the common and the differences between theories undertaken by Skinner and Freud. The most significant discussion of the article looks into determinism and positivism. However, Freud is seen to be an influencer of most of the work that is formulated by Sigmund Freud. Among the critical areas of development include defense mechanisms, use of metaphor, and dream symbolism.

C. The work undertaken by the two scholars shows the importance of schools of thought. Many psychological dynamics fall into different categories that people call them schools of thought. The concurring issues surrounding B.F Skinner and Freud is the aspect of focusing on conflicts more than on harmony.

1. The paper focuses its discussion on the relationship between the work of B.F Skinner and Sigmund Freud in comprehending the nature of psychoanalysis and its connection to human growth and development .

· Theme 1: Differences between B.F Skinner and Sigmund Psychoanalysis

A. Overskeid (2007) argues that despite the success behind psychoanalytic theory, there are major contributions that show distinctions and at the same time additional work on its development.

1. The models used to discuss the psychoanalytic theory is described by both B.F Skinner and Sigmund Freud.

2. It is important because individuals have to understand their sexuality and environments for them to know how it affects their current thinking and development.

· Theme 2: Presenting Criticism of the Psychoanalysis

A. Eagle (2007) presents the question about alterations in the psychoanalytic treatment, models, and concepts.

1. It provides illustrative examp les such as parameters and widening scope in the treatment provided by psychoanalysis. It rejects the enlightenment scope and the narrative truth in its discussion. Research and clinical practice creates a comprehensive argument on the topic of study.

· Conclusion

A. Psychoanalysis is an important component of understanding relevant factors that support the development of man. Its explanations are still used in research and psychological practices.

B. However, a distinction by B.F Skinner and Sigmund Freud makes it possible to get a deeper perspective of what is being discussed and to build additional research on the topic of discussion.

For each of the entries below, the entire annotation needs to be indented to 0.5, or 0.75 inches

Incorrect and incomplete reference

This is not going in the right direction and needs to be redone. Keep in mind that the directions for the paper are to: “Focus specifically on the key aspects of Freudian thought which caused these other theorists to distance themselves from Freud's views and influence. Consider also the major differences among themselves which caused them to diverge from one another.” (see Template for the week 5 Assignment that accompanied the week 5 announcements, and the module 7 assignment directions).

This is incomplete, and these themes may need to be changed/adjusted (see above comment), but they need to be more clearly defined, and set each of these sections up with context. Make sure that they align with your thesis statement. You need to focus the reader on exactly how you are interpreting the themes in terms of your paper, and how they fit into the overall point you are making (should be clear to the reader why you are talking about them). Clearly tie each theme to your thesis statement.

After making any necessary adjustments, make sure this is clearly aligned with your paper (thesis statement), and the directions for the assignment. Also, remember to reacquaint the reader with the thesis statement – probably should do that at the beginning of the conclusion section – then review- then fully develop the synthesized idea.
