Making a Mid-Life Career Change
Are you thinking of a mid-life career change? Mid-life career change is going through a transitioning phase in career, whether if you are in your 20’s, 30’s, or 40’s. A mid-life career change is challenging, and it gets harder if you are older or married with kids. A change in career has always symbolized an escape from job dissatisfaction, work problems, lack of promotion opportunities, or boredom (Coleman, 1999). Making a Mid-Life career change is one of the things considered by the majority of people in different countries. It is through creating a mid-life career change whereby people require knowledge and skills on how various tasks are carried out. The ability of different people who makes a mid-life career change helps to ensure that they are able to achieve their academic goals (Curran, Hamilton, Mansfield, Mountz, Walton-Roberts, Werner, & Whitson, 2019). I have been able to make a mid-life career change to ensure that I pursue a career that I enjoy and love what I do. Also, I was able to experience different challenges in my 30's because of my company closing down. Therefore, I was able to change my career and advanced my education and enhanced my transferable skills. Besides, obstacles were experienced hence affecting the time I took to complete my career change. I ended up having to interview and job shadow in my career field to help myself be successful in my career change. Therefore, I had to seek guidance and counseling to ensure I was in the right direction on matters related to my mid-life career change.
In life, people go through various experiences in their lives. The lessons are either life-changing for the good, bad, or a combination of both. There comes the point in your life where you realized that where you are working or what you are doing is not exactly where you want to be or who you want to become. When deciding to make a mid-life career change, there are a lot of things that come to mind. First, a career change might require investment in additional education or a step back in earning until the new career is established. Second, a midlife career change that is forced by individuals to make different challenges, especially for married people with kids and can disrupt the family’s lifestyle or your lifestyle. Third, how long will it take for you to reach the career goal you desire. The education on career selection plays a significant role in ensuring that the people pursuing the career are best suited. When people engage themselves in mid-life career changes, the family’s income is affected to fund the training/education. Therefore, there will be many sacrifices in the family, and it becomes harder for them to depend on their families.
First, when going through a mid-life career change. The increased cases of unemployment in the entire country has led to many people making a mid-life career change. The ability that I was able to make a mid-life career change was facilitated by the fact that I was unemployed back and forth. Therefore, I needed to pursue a career I love and ensure that there is various job available out there. My mid-life career change would enable me to acquire knowledge of how different businesses should be run. This will again provide me with enough knowledge and skills in running various businesses. As a result of the mid-life career change, I have been able to come up with different ideas, therefore, ensuring that I run a successful business in the future. When transitioning over to a new career, there will be a lot of research, and there may be a need to spend some money out of pocket or take a loan. Also, it may cost money because you may need training or need to attend school to get your degree in the field that you are interested in. For instance, if you are changing your career from a manufacturing job to an office job. You may need to get your bachelor’s degree in order to meet the education of the job requirement. This means you may have to work part-time while attending a school, or you may have to start an entry-level position and move your way up the ladder. Also, when a person carries out a mid-life career change depending on the person’s income might be affected negatively due to the fact a large portion of the salary will be used in paying the school fees. As a result of the increased industrialization in the country, the majority of the people have ended up engaging in a mid-life career change. However, the mid-life career changes are mainly carried out to enable the people in the country to reduce the causes of poverty, which leads to their suffering, primarily when not effectively controlled (Hughes, Kinder, & Cooper, 2019). The people have been changing careers from office to manufacturing because work may be less. This has played essential roles in ensuring that people who changed careers that the economy of the country is developed and hence grows in the required rate. Some people carrying out the mid-life career changes carry out the learning process during their part-time, and therefore this brings about changes to the programs of the people. However, the ability of the individual to make the mid-life career changes might bring unnecessary challenges to one’s family. They are hence leading to a lack of basic needs of the children in the family. Also, the social life of a person is affected negatively. This might make it hard for a person to afford different basic needs of the family, and hence, planning is required by a person who decides to carry out the mid-life career changes. Moreover, when carrying out the mid-life career changes, a lot of time might be used before a person achieves the set goals and objectives. The individual thinking of carrying out the mid-life career changes should, therefore, be encouraged to prepare in the best way possible as that will ensure that the right activities are carried out. Again, the people should be encouraged to acquire guidance and counseling for the purposes of ensuring that they do not suffer as they carry out a mid-life career change.
When changing careers, family members who depend on your income might have an opinion about your career change. Or, a spouse who is picking up the bills may become resentful of you pursuing your passion. This may mean that while in transition, you may not be able to buy the things you want versus the things you need. You may have to sacrifice social life. When a person carries out a mid-life career change, the individual depending on the person’s income might be affected negatively due to the fact a large portion of the salary will be used in paying the school fees. Furthermore, depending on the training, education, and experiences it may take longer for an individual to achieve career goals. It may take longer to reach your desired position. For instance, if the career field you are shifting to requires a bachelor’s degree, it may take four years before you can reach the career goal. The guidance and counseling are carried out in the best way possible; it becomes easy for the people to decide on what career they should pursue hence reducing the cases of time wastage, especially when making the mid-life career change. The members of the public should again look for role models who will encourage them in the process of carrying out the mid-life career change. The role model will, therefore, make it easy for people to pursue the right career courses. This will play significant roles in ensuring that the people achieve their academic goals and objectives in the stipulated time. For the success of the people to be achieved, they should be encouraged to carry out the learning processes based on their life experience. This will, therefore, help them in their future career activities hence reducing the cases of job dissatisfaction, which enables them to think about making the mid-life career change. It is the role of the members of the public to consult before pursuing some courses hence ensuring that they do not make the career shifts (McLean, Köber, & Haraldsson, 2019).
In summary, a career change can be an exciting experience. Every person in the world goes through different experiences and struggles. Mid-life career change is not always an easy process, although the career changes can seem easy and clear. Hence, it is not always quick, but it is usually clear and as easy as you want it to be. It is a secure and safe way towards your ideal work, career, job, company, and industry. It is a personal reinvention, job satisfaction, and retirement security when shifting careers in midlife. However, it is the role of the government to ensure that the members of the public are guided in the manner in which they make career decisions. When effective career decisions are made, it becomes easy for people to avoid the mid-life career change as that might affect the manner in which various families are run. When not avoided, a mid-life career change can lead to a waste of time for some of the people in different countries. This is because some of the careers pursued by various people take a long time to complete, and this brings about negative impacts on the family. To reduce this, many people should ensure that they carry out consultations before pursuing different careers. It is through the consultations whereby the people can acquire ideas on what courses they should pursue to fit the job market in the country. Moreover, the consultations by the people can be used in ensuring that the right career decisions are made within a given period of time. People should be encouraged to pursue careers that fit them as ways of ensuring that the cases of mid-life career changes are reduced (Vondracek, Lerner, & Schulenberg, 2019). The challenging experiences experienced by the people should be addressed by the government hence ensure that the people are doing something that interests them. Some of the hardships leading to the mid-life career change are lack of employment opportunities for the people who pursue some courses in the country. However, the government should be able to come up with programs that ensure that equal job opportunities are provided to the people. To address the mid-life career change, the government should create a favorable environment for different investors to come up with businesses in the country. Again, retirement security should be provided in all career fields. This will play essential roles in ensuring that the people are satisfied with the careers they pursue hence reducing the mid-life career changes. The employers in the country should again be encouraged to safeguard the rights of the employees to encourage them to continue working their career field (Walker, 2019).
