Discussion 1:

Situational awareness is a cybersecurity term that is derived from traditional warfare. It aims at identifying threats and the possible ways cybersecurity can change over a specific period. This change can also be influenced by the fluctuation in the diverse environmental variables. Therefore, the presence of situational awareness in any company shows that there is a clear knowledge of the threats that might face its structure, flow of capital, and data, thus making it a driver for detection and response control (Tianfield, 2016). This kind of awareness is a perception of any company’s security posture and threat environment that helps to project the status of the near future. Situational awareness involves statistics of network and processing engineering that includes an index of outbound and inbound managements (Tianfield, 2016). These statistics assist in distinguishing the distorted ports and also improve work rates in any company. Additionally, they help in considering and compromising commercial operation conditions, like comprehending new applications that need to be executed. Thus, the IT agencies can easily figure out any possible security dangers involved with the applications. 

Situational analysis requires inputs from a huge number of systems that may be either internal and external. These types of systems may incorporate network managing security data and deterrence systems giving it the response control potential (Rajivan & Cooke, 2017). This analysis can assist a company in determining cybersecurity expenditures to achieve great results thus providing security and performances that are reliable. Many firms need to extract information from diverse internal and external systems, which is possible when utilizing situation awareness. Finally, cybersecurity situation awareness is not any single piece. Instead, it is a unique way of thinking that needs to be recognized by the intellectual utilization of the products and procedures that comprises the data contexts.

Discussion 2:

 Situational awareness can be described as “Within a volume of time and space, the perception of an enterprise’s security posture and its threat environment; the comprehension/meaning of both taken together (risk); and the projection of their status into the near future,” (Gawron, 2019). The most advantageous thing about situational awareness is that it offers an aspect of dynamicity, this means that it offers a way of dealing with new and evolving threats.  

       To understand how situational awareness becomes a driver for detection and response control, it is important to understand how it works. Situational awareness is a mindset. It is not a skill. The first thing with situational awareness is recognizing that risks exist (Gawron, 2019). This means that one has to eliminate the denial that threats exists because they actually do. In this area, it is also important to trust intuition or “gut” feeling (Gawron, 2019). The subconscious tends to notice things that are at times unquantifiable. This therefore means that if a leader or just a person trusts their gut feeling to know if something is okay or not, there is a high possibility of finding a problem and therefore realizing it before it can cause serious damage.

       Situational awareness leads to critical decision making. After detecting the problem, then the person in question can make a quick response. Some responses will require that they be made at the spur of the moment while others may need some discussion with other parties (Gawron, 2019). All this will depend on the kind of problem there is. The person who has realized the problem will be in a position to make these decisions which may make or break the project or system.

      All this shows how situational awareness works to ensure detection and response control.
