Running Head: RESEARCH PROPOSAL 1

RESEARCH PROPOSAL 4

Research Proposal.

Research Topic: Why do people still believe that war is an instrument of conflict

resolution?

The study will start by first examining the different forms of conflict resolution both old and new. The focus will be on international conflicts because those are the leading causes of war. The term Conflict resolution in the study will be used to refer to the efforts used to prevent or mitigate violence that results from inter-state conflicts. This will then lead to the question of whether war can be used as an instrument of conflict resolution. More like using violence to prevent more violence.

The study will then examine major wars that happened in history and analyze the outcomes of each. This is in a bid to determine the reason those wars started and whether those objectives were met by the time the war ended. This information will help in deciding if the war was necessary at all. People often go to war to get something out of it. The question is whether that thing can be obtained using other means other than war. According to Berdal, the task of achieving peace after a war can be quite challenging and he, therefore, thinks that nations should strive to prevent war and try to resolve conflicts through alternative means. The aftermath of war can span for years after the war ends (Berdal, 2017). This book will be helpful in answering the research question of whether war is truly an instrument of conflict resolution. Coates, on the other hand, believes that sometimes war is necessary for nations to prove themselves. His book "The Ethics of War" discusses the moral justification of war and presents a different perspective from that of Berdal. These two books will form the main references for the study.
