Navigating Writing Projects Transcripts Greetings! The goal of this short video is to assist you in navigating our writing projects. The Writing Project Roadmaps are organized to include Key Questions, Problem, Audience, Purpose, and Process because that is what writers have to think about when they compose. The directions remind you to please skim through the entire project at least once and also refer to the calendar for due dates. That way as you go through the entire process you can keep in mind your goal as the writer. A Key Question guides you to think about what you should be considering as you move through the process. The answer to it can help shape your thesis, or main claim. The reason academic writers compose is to showcase their critical thinking. Writing itself is thinking. And, as you write, you are working through these problems. Not all the problems have specific solutions, and that is okay. The academic community collectively discusses relevant issues and sometimes takes years to begin to see ways of handling them. One of the least considered, but most important parts of writing is the audience. Who you are writing to, what they know and don’t know, and their beliefs will help you determine what your message is and how it should be structured. In addition to audience, the purpose of your writing will also determine structure. For example, if you want to ask a friend to go do something, you would not write a formal essay. You might use text or social media. Finally, the process is important. For the purposes of our class, I am designing experiences to help you prepare for your writing projects. Each page and assignment is carefully constructed and placed in a specific order by me to help you write your paper. Each project will have a slightly different process as I continue to challenge you in more complex ways. Following the process, as opposed to skipping around content is highly advised. Part of the entire experience will be working together. Paying close attention to due dates and checking Canvas regularly to see what your peers are contributing will deepen your own understanding of the content and will help you write more sophisticated papers.
