Native American
Much of what is learned about Indigenous Americans comes from the early years of schooling (learning history). When we reflect on this learning, however, it is quite incomplete. This week, in order for us to effectively relearn who Indigenous Americans are - their rich and diverse history, experiences of political and socio-economic oppression, and ongoing as well as contemporary efforts to transform their communities - we will spend a bit of time on our own pasts and critically explore what is typically taught about these First People.
No outside sources, this is your own story and your thought or what you learn before. (Just make up a time and write it like a real personal experience) 1 page
Before sharing your thought, reflect upon what you learned at a young age about “Native Americans.” Think carefully about what you first learned about "Native Americans" in your early school years.
In your initial post, select a particular representation in your learning history that stands out to you as a key source of learning. (ie. Was it Thanksgiving? Was it a children's book that stands out in your mind? Was it history class and the Battle of Little Bighorn?) Explain and tell your story about what you know about Indigenous Americans from this classroom experience(s). Evaluate it by answering the following questions:
· Was this an effective educational approach?
· Did this story tell the “whole story?” If not, what was missing?
· Were any stereotypes used as a basis of representing Indigenous Americans? Can you identify any? Why do you think these stereotypes were emphasized?
· What do you recommend changing about this educational approach? Share three (3) topics that you feel ought to be included in school curriculum regarding Indigenous Americans.
· Include an image or two to emphasize your learning history/experience.
After sharing your initial post, respond to two (2) other posts. In each response, comment on the educational experience your classmate described, focusing on how learning histories have been challenged by the course content for this week. Each response should be about a paragraph in length.
