Nationalism

1. Nationalism: is pride in your nation and the belief that your people are the best people.

2. Self-determination: the belief that a people should be allowed to determine how they are governed; typically as their own nation.

3. Balkan Nationalism: the national pride of the Balkan people ignites the tensions in Europe that cause World War I.

4. Austria and the Balkans: Austria ruled a massive empire in Europe comprised of many different ethnic backgrounds. They wanted to maintain strict control over these people and take the land they claimed.

5. Russia and the Balkans: for many years Russia fought to gain a foothold in Europe through the Balkans. Many of the people living the Balkans are Slavic, the same ethnic background as Russians; thus, Russia should rule the Balkans.

6. Germany and the Balkans: the Germans believe that they are the best people and all of Europe should be united under their rule. Thus, they need to subdue Austria and invade the Balkans.

7. The Ottomans and the Balkans: the Ottomans dominated the Balkans for centuries but as their power dwindled the surrounding nations fought to take the land; yet, the Ottomans still struggle to keep as much as possible.

8. The People of the Balkans: the numerous ethnic groups do not consider themselves Austrian, Russian, German or Ottoman and do not want to be ruled by these powers; they want to form their own nations.

9. Why does everyone want the Balkans? Money, the Balkan territory would give the owner access to the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Black Sea; this would be excellent for trade.

10. Alliances: all European nations realize that the passions of nationalism and desire for the Balkans will inevitably cause a war so they quickly pick sides; this only increases the chances for war.
