Research Question: What is the Significance of Local Hosting of Faculty- Created Open Education Resources?

It has been noted that because of increase in the cost of buying Textbooks, students and faculty members have had a challenge in meeting the cost of education. These costs are note only involving the purchase of the required textbooks; they are coupled with the other costs that students have to carter for like paying the tuition fees and other educational costs. The prototype that we have what which shows that there can be an integration of technology in meeting the educational demands is the University of Dubuque which has utilized the development process. The publishers work with the institutions to supply the access codes to the students so as to minimize on the cost of purchasing the books in hard copy.

The access code may limit the students from copying the work, printing, or altering with the written digital work that has been presented in the book. Those institutions that have moved into this system have ended up providing free basic primary education to their students. This of course is something that has been well received. Those institutions that are large enough, partner with resource sharing consortiums like MnPALS cooperation together with Minnesota so as to provide access those platforms that can provide books like Pressbooks.

There are also smaller institutions that may not have the ability to negotiate and discuss about how they are to be treat or partner with the publisher. That is why there is an introduction of a subject that has been neglected for a while. There is a way an institution can be able to create a low- cost self-hosted solution so as to support OER materials in the faculty. The prototype that is available as I mentioned earlier is the University of Dubuque.

Pressbooks makes free software for anyone willing to taste their services and all they need to do is to customize, utilize and remix the software. To begin with, one has to decide whether they are going to host on themselves or they are going to be hosted by pressbook. Pressbook hosting fee starts from7,000 dollars for silver plan to 14,000 dollars for gold plan. The University chose to go for the plan of hosting on their own through the Amazon Web Services (AWS)

The site may require maintenance so as to keep it updated so that it may relate to pressbooks and WordPress installations and updates. The work on pressbooks can be handled by a librarian or someone who is a professional especially at smaller institutions. This then makes the issue of self-hosting more reliable and sustainable over time. the main push is for the students to enjoy quality materials at a low cost.

The team can still work with the local faculty members to add materials on the portfolio. This was tested when they worked with a professor of geology in the initial moments and they had great fruits coming from the venture. There is already that option for uploading materials from members of the faculty. One can still import work from a word document. This therefore tells us that this system can enhance education in our institutions.
