Narrative Topic and Structure: ➢ Now that you’ve proposed a topic, This research project requires you to write a historical narrative about any topic related to the course. For example, you might decide to explore how the guitar evolved throughout the twentieth century, the styles of music it influenced, and how its evolution affected everything from race and ethnicity to science and technology. Another option could be to trace how African American musicians influenced the overall progression of American musical culture by starting with spirituals and ending with Hip-Hop. Narrative Sources: As a research project, you will need to use scholarly works and primary sources to form the basis of your source list. Wikipedia, for example, is not a scholarly source but can prove useful in locating scholarly sources if you examine the footnotes. A minimum of 15 sources (with 10 of those being primary sources) are required for your narrative. A secondary source is a source that was written/created after the time period of your narrative, while a primary source comes from the time period of your paper. For example, if your paper explores the evolution of Jazz from the 1920s to the 1970s, an article published in an academic journal by a historian in 1998, it would be considered secondary; song lyrics from a Jazz song produced in the 1930s would be considered primary because it comes from the time period of your narrative.
