[Document title] [Document subtitle] Throughout the semester we have had the esteemed privilege of having a variety of different executive guest speakers who have been able to give us an insight on their path to success in today’s business environment. Throughout the semester these executives have provided us with valuable wisdom and information that will be able prepare us for a successful career in business. In many of their presentations, many of these executives were able to present many similar themes that they have encountered throughout their career and believe play a major role in having a successful business career. Although many of the guest speakers did share similar values and themes there where others who seemed to contradict each other’s messages, which they provided to the class. One of these similar themes that was presented was the importance of a good culture in a work environment that really supports your values. For example, Tiffany David mentioned in her presentation to “ find out the culture of organization, values, make sure the organization is similar to what you are looking for in a job, nothing will ever be perfect so just get in there get what you can from the company and due your best for the company as well”(David). Mrs. Tiffany is a management consultant and she was able to touch on this theme of the importance of culture and values in a company. It is vital that a company’s values and culture is similar to ones own because you will invest a lot of your time and effort and if your values clash with the companies then you will be miserable in that job. Mrs. Tiffany even mentioned that one of her greatest regrets was staying at a toxic company for too long and she felt like that sucked a part of her soul away, which is why this theme is so important you do not want to be stuck in a job like that. Another Executive that shared this similar theme was Darrell Pliant who is the current senior VP and GM of Harrah’s resort and who I had the privilege of interviewing. In the interview he mentioned that the reason that “Funner California” is so much fun for the costumers is due to the type of culture he was able to create with his employees. He mentioned that by building a culture where he lets his employees be themselves and dress as they like, allows the employees to provide happy and more fun environment, which then results in the costumers having that “Funner California” experience. A second theme that was mentioned multiple times by the executive speakers was too never leave a company or a boss on bad terms, in other words too not burn down bridges. Our very first speaker Misti Cain gave us a great example to why this is true, she mentioned that in a company she was working she had heard she was going to get laid off and made sure to do even more for the benefit of the company before being dismissed. This later lead to her being brought back into the company and being offered a better job for acting like such a professional. One final common theme is the importance of mentorship in the development and success of one career. My first example is given by Berry J. Simon Told story about mentor and how he had a mentor who took him through corporate grooming and really taught him the way of the business then leading to his success in his career. The second example for this theme was given by Robin Toft who answered a question of mine about if she ever had a mentor and what impact did, they have on her career. She answered that question by saying that she had many mentors in her life and they played a major role in the success of one’s career. For example, she explained “that mentors possess answers to many problems you want to solve or things you might want to accomplish in your career because they have already been there and done those things so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel” (Toft). I loved that analogy by her saying that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, mentors have done all these things and they have the answers, both of these executive speakers had great mentors in their careers and that is a major reason they are as successful as they are in their careers. Although many of these execs shared similar themes there where some contradictory message between some of the speakers. For example, one being the way you are involved with your employees on a social level. Robin Toft believes that it is important to be highly involved in your employees’ lives. She believes that they are like family, thinks it is important for her to understand them. While on the other hand David Swanson believes it is a mistake higher people similar too you and that you agree and are very close with because you need people who can willing to challenge you and not be afraid to bring about new ideas. His perspective is built more on the idea of not wanting to get too close to employees because you get to a too friendly state where there isn’t that completive culture. This contradiction coming from each one believing in their own culture and what they think is more effective. In conclusion, for me my most valuable executive was by far Mr. Pliant, I was part of the team who interviewed him and his insight was the most valuable. I was really able to understand the importance of a company’s culture and how important it is to really be yourself. My most valuable insight I was able to get from this course was really too not give up, all of these executives became so successful because they never gave up, they embraced the challenges and overcame them to get their careers where they wanted them too be. Really being able to hear their stories were able to motivate me and really give me the confidence too really pursue my goals, because if many of these executives who like me came from so little where able to go so far, I believe I can do it as well.
