Importance of Digital Forensics Skills
In digital forensics, IT professionals use their information security skills to retrieve data and perform analysis of the information from computers and other devices, to solve various crimes and take down criminals. Forensic investigators look into incidents of hacking and tracking sources of computer attacks as well as retrieving stolen or lost data. Therefore having the basic IT skills gives the forensic investigators with vast knowledge about computers in terms of hardware and software. Moreover, they must have intricate knowledge of computer operating systems. Having a comprehensive understanding of the working of digital devices, networking, and experience in computer systems are imperative for those working in digital forensics. According to Bradford (2017), digital forensic investigator basic IT skills are necessary to secure against data breaches as well as knowing the techniques used to target systems, since the same knowledge can be used to help prevent crimes and solving them.
Digital forensics investigators also need to have analytical skills to be able to properly analyze available evidence and useful insights concerning a specific crime. With analytical skills, forensic teams are able to carefully presenting evidence in a structured manner. As with any other highly analytical job, the forensic investigators should pay more attention to detail and focus on the methodological approaches to be used (Hoffman, 2019). These skills are highly significant in knowing the difference between ideas and hypotheses presented therein. Moreover, the forensic teams must also possess investigative skills such as knowing all the necessary items of vital evidence needed to solve a criminal case (Freiling & Zoubek, 2017).
The investigative skills lie within the ability to characterize different situations of a crime, and able to interpret the existing evidence. Such skills enable the forensic teams to uncover the nature of the crimes and discover certain patterns of data needed to solve a specific crime. It is therefore essential for forensic investigators to be equipped with such critical skills when conducting any digital forensic investigation.
