Overview: Cultural Competence Self-Assessment

The PROMOTING CULTURAL and LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY Self-Assessment Checklist for Personnel Providing Primary Health Care Services checklist is intended to heighten the awareness and sensitivity of health care givers to the importance of cultural and linguistic cultural competence in health, mental health and human service settings. It provides concrete examples of the kinds of beliefs, attitudes, values and practices which foster cultural and linguistic competence at the individual or practitioner level. There is no answer key with correct responses. However, if you frequently responded "C", you may not necessarily demonstrate beliefs, attitudes, values and practices that promote cultural and linguistic competence within health and mental health care delivery programs.

Instructions:

1. Complete the PROMOTING CULTURAL and LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY Self-Assessment Checklist. Some questions may not apply to your current role. Please do you best to answer with A, B, or C. There is not a wrong answer.

2. Score and review your responses. Ask yourself if you have Cultural and Linguistic competence. From your personal experience where are your strengths and weaknesses?

Conclusions and Reflections

Answer the following questions using your personal opinions and views. Write a minimum of 100 words in one or two paragraphs for this assignment. APA is not required. If you cite sources please add references. You may use this document or a separate paper to complete this assignment.

1. Describe your overall CULTURAL and LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY strengths, and weak- nesses.

Throughout the Cultural and Linguistic Competency self-assessment checklist I noticed that my strongest section was communication styles. I believe that I am able to notice that there are patients that speak different languages and am able to identify ways to communicate with these individuals. I am also able to note that though these patients are not able to speak English, this does not mean they are not intelligent. The checklist showed that I am somewhat strong in the values and attitudes section. I believe that the parts I struggle with mostly pertain to the job I work which doesn’t require me to do so much research on cultures because the large majority of people I work with from day to day are of similar cultures. My weakest point in the checklist was physical environment, materials, and resources. This also is not much of a need at my facility. Working in a rural hospital I don’t typically run into very many different cultures as I would if I worked in a hospital in a large place such as Dallas.

2. How will this awareness help you communicate with families?

I believe that I will be more conscious of the different cultures and ways to facilitate these families. I also think I will be more willing to do research to learn to accommodate different cultures as I come in contact with them.

3. What did you learn that surprised you?

I was surprised that I scored so low in the values and attitudes portion. I feel as though I am pretty open to different cultures, but I am just not exposed to a large variety of different cultures due to being from such a small town.
