Assignment Module 2-1 Health Promotion and Wellness Assessment

Name: Date: 09/07/2019

Overview: Health promotion and the wellness connection

This information will be included in your Assignment Module 5-1 Family Health Assessment. Please use your interview family for this assignment

Health Promotion and maintaining family wellness is beyond preventing illness. Love (2010) states wellness is a state of optimal health to which each of us can aim regardless of age, physical limitation, & income level.

Instructions:

1. Identify areas needing intervention by using the using the modified Love to Live Well As- sessment below to highlight suggestions you may make for your interview family.

2. Use your interview family and identify areas for making health and wellness promotion.

3. Describe these recommendations for health promotion in detail.

Interventions

Using the using the modified Love to Live Well Assessment below, identify and elaborate on areas your interview family may need health promotion or wellness interventions. Write a minimum of 200 words in two or three paragraphs for this assignment. APA is not required. If you cite sources please add references per APA 6th edition. You may use this document or a separate paper to complete this assignment.

1. Describe your overall recommendations for health promotion or wellness interventions for your interview family. Please list two or more interventions in comprehensive detail.

 The family I interviewed for this assignment are overall a healthy, young family. However, I feel that there were some areas in which they need to be educated. My main concern regarding this family, is that the father/husband of this family is a smoker. This was an obvious topic to discuss the benefits of quitting vs. the harm in continuing to smoke. We know that the primary smoker is at risk of many diseases related to cigarettes, but it is known that secondhand smoking is just as harmful to those that are subjected to it. My recommendation would be to begin the process of quitting by making a conscious deci- sion to stop. Another would be to find distractions, such as exercise, meditation, chewing gum (nicotine gum) or hard candy; seeing a health professional that can prescribe medi- cations to quit smoking. Family support is also important. Having someone that can hold them accountable, not by shaming them, but by showing that they care and are con- cerned by their health. Another intervention that I would recommend is to make yearly checkups. They are great at scheduling checkups for their kids, but the parents had not had a yearly check up in over five years. I would recommend that they have a yearly

well-check as well as a yearly gynecologist visit for the mother. This can help recognize preventable diseases and allow for early interventions if needed to improve their health.

2. Create a concise patient teaching plan for communicating and educating the Health Promotion/Wellness recommendations/interventions to your interview family? What will you say? How will you provide the information? For example, will you use handouts or a video? Will you speak to the whole family or just certain members?

 My plan will include educating the parents in the family. The kids are too young to be in- volved, therefore the parents will be educated, and, in the future, they can teach their kids about the importance of smoking cessation as well as the importance of having yearly checkups. I plan to ask the father of the family why he has started to smoke and if he knows the effects that smoking has on his body as well as the effects secondhand smoking has on others, in this case his family. I plan to provide different visual aids as well as handouts that show the risks and dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke and will direct him to different websites that have information on how to quit. The CDC website as well as the American Cancer Society website have incredible information that can assist individuals to quit smoking. Some interventions that I can provide would be to make a conscious decision to quit smoking, find a distraction, obtain nicotine gum/patch and lastly make an appointment with a primary care physician to either prescribe medi- cations and get early screening for cancer, since he has been a smoker for 20+ years.

 I also plan on asking questions as to why they don’t see a doctor regularly. They have great jobs that provide insurance coverage for the whole family. Well checks are free and there is no copay, so there really isn’t an excuse as to why they don’t see a doctor on a regular basis. I will educate them that this is preventative medicine and that this is the only way that one can help prevent diseases such as diabetes and heart disease and can catch cancer early and treat it early for a higher chance to beat it. I will provide them with information from their insurance website about the doctors that are in network and that they can see.

3. Briefly reflect on this experience and the lesson you have learned.

 This experience has really taught me about the importance of paying attention my own health and that of my family. It’s easy to see the faults in someone and ignore one’s own. It’s easy, as a nurse, to tell someone about the importance of diet and exercise, but per- sonally, I struggle with these health concepts myself. I often find myself giving advice that I myself don’t follow. I need to be more conscious of my and my family’s health and make decisions that will benefit the well being of my family.
