Hi everyone,
The best approach to the challenge of educating my staff on how the team can meet performance objectives for reimbursement from government-sponsored programs is collaboration, communication, and teamwork. A lot of researches have indicated that anything is possible in a healthcare institution where there is collaboration and teamwork. Teamwork and collaboration go hand in hand with communication. Without communication, teamwork and collaboration cannot be achieved. According to Mao and Woolley (2016), “teamwork in healthcare maximizes collective intelligence through inclusive collaboration and communication”. Through collaboration and communication, I will get the staff to come together into one team and this will make the training easy. It will be easy to achieve the goal when we all have a common understanding of what is required and collaborate towards achieving it.
The collaborative teamwork principle I will apply is mutual support. Mutual support means that we benefit from one another. I will create a situation where each team member supports each other and understands their responsibilities and contribution towards achieving the goal of increasing patient volumes so as to meet performance objectives for reimbursement. Through mutual support, there will be efficiency at work, which will increase effectiveness and reduce errors. This will lead to the provision of high-quality care, which will in return attract a high number of patients. Through mutual assistance there will be;
· Task assistance – members of the team will be ready to help each other with tasks, thereby making work easy.
· Feedback – information provided for educating the team will be timely, accurate, and directed towards the right audience.
· Advocacy and assertion – every team member will be allowed to contribute and give ideas in the right manner. Every member will suggest the right action to take to achieve the main goal.
· Two challenge rule – members have the right to air their views at least two times to make sure they are clear. Then the ideas provided are considered and discussed by the whole team.
· Collaboration – with collaboration everyone in the team wins. It is the only strategy to achieving the objective of a high patient volume. Collaboration achieves a mutually satisfying solution resulting in the best outcome (Ferguson, 2008).
· DESC script – according to Ferguson (2008) it involves “Description the problem, Expression of concerns, Suggestion of alternatives, and stating Consequences”. This is the best strategy for resolving conflicts among team members and reaching a solution.
The reason why I chose the mutual support principle is because that is what teamwork is all about. To support one another for everyone’s benefit. This principle will ensure each member of the team will be ready to offer support when required. Problems have occurred in different healthcare environments due to issues such as stress of the staff, work overload, and job dissatisfaction. All these are issues that can be solved through mutual support. Mutual support, which is an important concept of teamwork, can be a solution to improve patients' safety during nurses' work overload (Khademian, 2019). To educate the staff on how to achieve a high patient volume, mutual support will be necessary for provision of timely and constructive information and feedback, and for common understanding of our responsibility.
