My Home

It goes without saying that east or west home is best. This proverb alludes that home is the best place despite all other places. I refer to it as a place and a feeling with a really comfortable chair. Personally, my perception about home is that it is a place where one is attached emotionally and physiologically. I have a strong bond with my home. My physiological and emotional bond with the place I refer to as my home was put into my mind some time back. The following inspired and the real meaning of home was installed into my head.

During my High school education, I passed excellently and received an acceptance letter from of the most reputable bodies in the country. I was very excited to go and study oversees, because I always dreamt about going to study and live in the US. Furthermore, I was going to Arkansas State University and taking classes to obtain my first undergraduate degree. Being that it was the first time that I was going outside the country, I was excited and sad at the same time because I was leaving my family and friends to a foreign land. Mostly, I was going to miss my best friend Omar with whom I had friends with since high school. Nonetheless, the day arrived, and I had to proceed to Arkansas State University. I said goodbye to my friend’s family and relatives, however I promised Omar to always talk to him and still come back one day. I went to the airport and embarked on a plane for the first time.

At noon I arrived at Memphis International airport after a 24 hour transit flight from Abu Dhabi. The weather was far different from the normal. The atmosphere was different: new faces, new buildings, and everything seemed strange. This inculcated fear of being alone in a new world makes me want to go back home. I was really stranded at the airport; however, a tall young beautiful lady with black sunglasses came to me and introduced herself. My dad had told me someone would come for me at the airport, so I took it easy. She took me to a hotel, and I paid everything and she promised to come for me the next day. The next day she took me to the university and gave me a room with everything. She also took me on a tour through the university and showed me the administration block, the library, and where my programs will be conducted and gave me a time table. I was very happy to be at Arkansas State University.

After all the orientation, I was back to the room. It was silent and I constantly thought about home. I frequently called my friends, parents and relatives. The TV channels were different, radio stations were a mystery to me. The days and nights were long and silent, and I had jetlag for a week and I couldn’t eat anything for two weeks. I had no friends. This made me have no appetite and nostalgia was developing. The next day I didn’t go to classes; I spent the whole day sleeping .Things were turning from bad to worse because I didn’t cook or buy food. My health deteriorated. I constantly called home, and asked my parent to come for me, but my dad was hesitant. One day the lady who gave me the room came to visit me. She was shocked as my skin was pale and I appeared weak. I had only attended one lecture in the first week. I stayed indoors and had no friends. She took me to a nearby health clinic? Hospital? And I was diagnosed with ulcers, but she told me that everything was fine, this prompted her to call my dad. He organized a trip back home for Christmas break. I left Arkansas State and came back in the Christmas break to the United Arab Emirates were my parents live. But after all I got used to this new place, and I found new friends and gave me self-confidence. This story gave me the real understanding of home. Also, this is why I refer home as a place, feeling really comfortable in your own furnishings? And be yourself and act normal.
