Born and raised in one of the highest crime areas of Oakland, California, it has always felt like a challenge against my environment. Aside from the constant threat to safety, my resources were limited growing up. I was raised in a single parent household with two older siblings. My mother did not complete high school and my father, whose highest education is high school, has been the sole provider for our family. At 9 my brother was murdered and emotional strain took a toll on my family. After the loss of my brother the emotional and financial stability of my family spiraled downwards. My parents’ divorce forced my mother to become homeless, living on a monthly stipend from social security for the last 12 years. In order to help provide for my mother I have maintained employment, beginning at the year’s old, balancing school and the burden of my mother living in her vehicle. I attended a private high school for two year, up until my father could no longer afford it for both my sister and I. I was then forced into the nearest high school in my district.I then realized the support I previously had at the private institution was no longer of access and my parents did not have much insight as to how I would pursue higher education. I attended counseling at my school frequently due to the stress and burden of not knowing how I was going to maneuver through my life after high school. Having no financial support to attend college and a responsibility to take care of my mother, I was afforded the opportunity to attend college solely with government assistance, though it left me living on the couches of classmates and my car.  I refused to become a victim of my environment and sought the education and resources needed to complete my journey.
