Hi Class,

Upcoming in this topic we have our 1st assignment in the course. I would like to provide you a bit of direction to help you do your best.

THIS IS IMPORANT -- THERE IS ONLY ONE OF THE FIVE ARTICLES THAT IS APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR DEGREE (THIS IS KIND OF LIKE THE DMV WHERE THERE MIGHT BE MULTIPLE ANSWERS THAT COULD BE ARGUED BUT YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE THE BEST ANSWER)– HINT – LOOK AT THE TITLES OF THE JOURNALS IN ADDITION TO THE TITLES OF THE ARTICLES.

Yes, when you ultimately conduct your dissertation research, you will choose journals outside of your specialty, BUT for the purposes of this assignment it is important that you learn to evaluate the articles and the sources to decide which one matches your program. Before you get mad at me because I am NOT going to tell you prior to the assignment which one is correct, I will give you a few hints –

1. Your degree is organizational LEADERSHIP. Focus on your degree not on your emphasis or what passion you may have in a particular area.

2. You are NOT getting a degree in education specifically, or counseling, or psychology. (hint hint – look at the titles of the journals)

3. You are not getting a degree in business or management (hint hint – look at the journal titles).

4. Once you have done all of that, you will likely have two articles that you will think might could fit.

5. Of those two, remember, your degree is not specifically in education (hint hint – look at the titles of the articles)

6. Now if you have done ALL of these steps, you should have a single article that fits the bill of organizational leadership. DO NOT message asking which one it is or if you have the correct article. I will refer you back to this list.

Okay, now that we have cleared that up, here are specifics about the assignment -

1. Watch the video -  RES-820 Reading Research  BEFORE beginning this assignment. My colleague, Dr. Kelly, does an excellent job of breaking down all the parts of this assignment.

2. Download the template that I have provided for this assignment. You will note the one that I have provided is formatted as per APA and does remove some of the extra wording.

3. Read the abstracts only for the FIVE articles from the Topic 2 study materials and choose the ONE article that matches your degree and emphasis. Remember, this class encompasses many different degrees and thus that is why you have to choose the one that matches your degree. Trust me, we are not trying to confuse you. See my steps above. Trust me, it will make your life much easier to do so.

4. Type directly on the template provided.

5. For part 1 of the assignment, you are to answer the questions using only the abstract of the chosen article. One sentence does not suffice to thoroughly answer the questions. You need at the very least one paragraph (90-200 words) for each question (other than question 1 which is the APA reference). You MAY NOT write in 1st person. It is important to establish a consistent 3rd person voice even when you are answering regarding your own thoughts and ideas.

6. For part 2 of the assignment, you will need to read the entire article and answer those questions. Again, you need to answer in paragraph form and you cannot copy and paste from the articles. You need to paraphrase in your own words and cite the author(s) appropriately.

7. For part 3 of the assignment, using the chosen article, examine the references and choose one of the articles in the reference to complete this section. Questions 1-3 do not need paragraphs but question 4 does need to be answered in paragraph form.

8. For part 4 of the assignment, this should entirely be in paragraph form. Use the questions to form your reflection but do not use the numbers in your response. Keep your reflection between 250-500 words and 1st person is fine in this section only but you should include in-text citations to support your writing as appropriate.

I know multi part assignments can be difficult so please if you have questions, reach out to me in the Questions to Instructor or Messages.

God bless,

Dr. Davis
