Analysis of Ethical Leadership Style
Based on the responses I provided in the questionnaire, my values include doing what is right, doing what benefits me the most, and doing what is fair. These are the three core values that would represent me. The three values reflect duty ethics, egoism, and justice. I believe that is always good to do the right thing at all times. Even in a dilemma, there is always the right thing to do though it may seem difficult. Doing what is right may involve following the rules and guidelines and doing what a rational person would do (Northouse, 2018). Besides, it is my core value to do what would benefit me the most. As long as what I am doing does not hurt other people, then I would choose the action or decision that would favor me the most. If I take action that would be favorable to me, then I would live a happy life. I also think that it is good to do what is fair. Justice is crucial and prevents some people from exploiting or harming others.
The application of ethics in everything that we do is crucial. Nursing is an important field where ethical conduct should be embraced. I am planning to be a nurse practitioner, and the core values I have identified would influence my future role in a significant way. Respect for human dignity is a crtical factor in nursing (Özden, Arslan, Ertuğrul & Karakaya, 2019). I like doing what is right and also doing what is fair. These two values promote human dignity because if I value human life, I would work to ensure that patient safety is enhanced at all times.
There are different and multiple challenges like heavy workload, lack of resources, staff skills, low life quality, and workplace violence (Özden, Arslan, Ertuğrul & Karakaya, 2019). Ethical leadership and the application of my core values would help me to overcome these challenges by developing an attitude of appreciating what is available rather than focusing on what is not. Even with all these challenges, I would be able to keep developing because I appreciate that I am doing the right thing of saving people’s lives and caring for those in need.
My core values would also influence my role as a nurse by enabling me to promote advocacy, social justice, and collaboration. a nurse should be an advocate for the patient, the family, and the general community (Jeon, Park, Choi & Kim, 2018). I would apply my ethical values to ensure that I advocate for better and improved quality of life for both the patients and the nurses. By utilizing my value for “doing what benefits me” I would also be advocating for the other nurses within the healthcare setting. Through collaboration with other players in the sector, I would be pushing for an improved working environment for the nurses and other healthcare staff (Özden, Arslan, Ertuğrul & Karakaya, 2019). My values would influence me to strive to ensure that the working conditions are improved and the quality of care enhanced.
Based on the core values that I have identified from the Ethical Leadership Style Questionnaire I think I would play an essential role in my nursing career. Nurses should be people that have the value of helping others, doing what is right, doing what is fair, and respecting other people. A nurse should also be a person with self-love because it is hard to love other people without loving yourself first. The application of these core values would enable me to maneuver in the sector and also overcome the multiple challenges that I would face every day. Several ethical dilemmas face nurses each day, ranging from the type of care and leadership style. The application of these ethical values would enable me to make informed decisions that would be fair.
