MUS 241 Language Of Music – History of Rock & Roll

RESEARCH PAPER ASSIGNMENT #2

Your mission…

1. You will be composing a 2-3 page research paper that will be focused around one inductee from The Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame.

2. Start at the website: www.rockhall.com or www.countrymusichalloffame.org

3. Go to the Inductees tab

4. Pick an inductee for the research paper

5. You will select ONE inductee and show how that person or band influenced the

development of music (genres), society (social aspect), or politics (fighting for a cause

through music); or you will select a performer and argue why he/she/they should be

inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame or Country Music Hall of Fame. You will pick only

one of the underlined areas on which to focus.

6. Your thesis statement must be specific and directly connect to your selected inductee

and one of the connections mentioned in number 5. Your thesis will include your

inductee, your angle, and 2-3 points. 3 would be preferred to make sure you have

enough research to craft your paper.

The following are some examples to get you started:

1. You may take an inductee and show how he/she/they impacted/influenced a genre (type) of music

such as rock, rap, rhythm and blues, folk, pop, metal, country, etc.

2. You may take an inductee and develop how that person or band reflected the issues of society or

politics at the time. For example, John Lennon believed in choosing love over anger, hate, and war.

You tie these issues to Lennon through your research of his life, beliefs, philosophies, lyrics, and his death

(posthumous) inspiration and impact on society many years later.

3. You may take an inductee and prove or show how he/she/they made a positive or negative impact

on society.

Research Paper Expectations

1.You will select a topic, begin researching finding 5-6 sources (1 will be R&R Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame, or a well known accredited site) and draft a thesis.

2.You will create a working outline Works Cited page

3. You will then type a rough draft with parenthetical citations

4. You will peer edit and use the Academic Lab for writing tips

5. You will then make any minor corrections and then submit a final copy that will include a 2-3 page MLA formatted research paper with a final, updated Works Cited Page with only sources used in paper listed (min of 3)

6. You will submit paper on line unless otherwise directed. Further instructions on deadlines are on the syllabus

7. Absences will not give you an extension on any upcoming deadline.

***Go home and pick your top 3-5 choices and do a little basic research on them. Remember, this is not a paper on their background. You are proving something.
