HSL 4820 Critical Reflection

Music and Grief

This critical reflection paper is worth 15 points and is due on the date listed in your syllabus. For this assignment, you must first read the journal article titled, “Music as Consolation—The Importance of Music at Farewells and Mourning” as well as the two shorter articles entitled “Six Ways Music Helps with Grief” and “Final Passages” found in our course folder. The articles are also attached to the assignment dropbox.

For this critical reflection paper, you are required to integrate one term or concept from the course into your reflection (correctly citing the textbook or PowerPoint lecture where it came from). In order to receive full credit, you must also clearly integrate the content from the article you read into your critical reflection.

Please address the following questions/prompts in your essay. The reflection paper should be approximately 2 pages double-spaced (without including your required reference page). The paper must be proofread and spell-checked, and your reference page must be in APA format.

CRITICAL REFLECTION PAPER PROMPTS: (Respond to these prompts in your paper)

1) What is a song or piece of music that you associate with grief/death/loss? (please include details such as title, singer, year released, etc. If you would like, you are free to attach the lyrics of the song at the end of your reflection--- but you are not required to). What is it about this song that reminds you of death/dying? Is it associated with someone you knew who died or death in general? (Please note: the actual subject of the song, does NOT have to focus specifically on death, it just has to be a song that you in some way connect with death or dying.)

2) If you were to pick a song to be played at your funeral or end-of-life celebration, etc., which song would you choose and why?

3) If you were a funeral director, what advice would you give to families when trying to pick a song to play at their loved one’s funeral? Make sure to cite the articles in your response.

4) Choose one of the six steps from the article “Six Ways Music Helps with Grief” and how it relates to or helps to enhance one of the concepts covered in class on grief and loss.
