Music 8: Music of American Cultures Honors Institute Project

As you know from the Syllabus, in addition to attending class sessions and producing an “On Campus Portfolio,” Honors Students will be submitting a special project. The project earns you a potential 300 points; failure to earn a minimum score of 150 points will result in a 0 points grade.

You have two options:

• Option 1: Contemporary Issues Journal (Individual or Group Project)

• Option 2: Digital Story (Alternative Individual Project)

These options and the grading rubric are described following instructions on how to submit your project.

Submitting Your Project You will be submitting your project as a CANVAS assignment titled “(Honors Students Only) Honors Special Project” within the regular Assignments area. Due to the probable large size of your project, be sure to allow plenty of time for your file to upload. To assist you, we are establishing 3 levels of submission deadlines.

• Early Submission (+40 Point Bonus): Submit project prior to 1 PM 48 hours before regular deadline

• Regular Submission (No Penalty or Bonus Points): Submit project after Early Submission but by regular deadline

• Late Submission (-40 Point Penalty): If, for any reason at all, you are unable to submit your project by the early or regular deadline, we will accept it until 1 pm on the day following the deadline

Please contact Professor Carey via Private Messages with any submission questions.

Option A: Contemporary Journal Project Instructions For this project, you, as an individual, or your group will look for recent events or developments in the real world that are related to the Music 8 coursework, then analyze these current affairs to identify the connections to course material in entries that you will write in a journal. This project should focus on the themes and cohorts studied within the course. It does not have to be music focused. We are providing examples of both Individual and Group projects. This can provide you with basic ideas on how your individual or group journal can look. Group Projects: The collaboration element of a group project provides a deeper level of learning and expands the learning community. It also allows for a shared work load in the creation of the project. Please advise Professor Carey if you wish to participate in a group project and she will assign groups. Due dates: there are THREE due dates for this project.

1. WK 5: Preliminary Ideas for Thesis Topic and initial research (50 points) SPRING 2021: MAY 6: Submit via Private Messages.

2. WK 7: Outline of project including expanded thesis and sample articles (50 points) SPRING 2021: MAY 20: Submit via Private Messages.

3. WK 9: Completed project due (200 points) SPRING 2021: JUNE 3: Submit via Canvas Assignment.

Professor Carey will schedule zoom appts to review steps 1 & 2. Initial ideas can be discussed via Private Messages. NOTE: The articles must be from the current academic quarter – no exceptions.
