concert live review

Due to COVID-19, we will be using live-streaming concerts to fulfill the social responsibility and concert requirement for this course. Please see the Blackboard link “Concert Review Info” for links to approved concerts.

The concert review is due within 7 days of the concert you stream. If you stream a concert on September 1 the review is due by September 8.

This review should be in the format of a formal paper. No sections should be numbered. It should flow for the reader. There are two components to this assignment. First, discussing the pieces performed, and second, comparing two pieces from the concert.

1. Include pertinent information regarding the location, time, type of concert, and date of the concert.

2. Discuss at least 5 of the pieces performed. Discuss the elements of music we have learned about in class in the music you hear and your responses to it. For example: The dynamics of the piece made it feel like a serene lullaby. Don’t forget to discuss the instruments used. What were you thinking about when you were listening? What type of mood did the music put you in?

1. Choose two pieces of music from the performance. Begin the section with a statement that you will compare and contrast two pieces of music from the concert. What is similar about these pieces? How are they different. It is important to use the elements of music such as melody, harmony, form, texture, instruments etc. as the basis for comparison.

2. Discuss the periods of music that the pieces were written during. To know what period of music a piece of music falls into, compare the dates of the composer’s life to the dates of the different periods of music. For example, a piece of music was written by Mozart, who lived from 1756 - 1791. He lived during the Classical period which was 1750 - 1820, so he is a Classical composer, and the characteristics of the Classical period would be expected of his musical works.

3. Make an assumption statement about your first impression of the pieces. Do you think they fit the period of music they were written during? Think about the characteristics of each period of music and how those characteristics are present, or not, in the music.

4. State evidence to support why these pieces reflect, or do not reflect the style of music they represent. In this section, you must use outside research and information from the book. What musical elements were present that are expected of the style of music the concert reflected? Were there characteristics in the music that did not belong to the period of time the piece was written during?

Be sure to cite and use sources to support your ideas. This section is not an opinion. Rather, it is a chance for you to demonstrate your knowledge using resources to support your statements.

5. Make a conclusion statement stating your final thoughts, now that you have researched the topic. How did your opinion change after doing research? What did you learn about the pieces that you compared?

Connecting what you have learned in class to what you hear in the concert is the key to this assignment.

Format Guidelines:

1. MLA or APA format will be accepted. Choose one and follow proper citations.

2. 12 font

3. One-inch margins and double spaced

4. 1,000 words not counting a cover sheet or bibliography – You must turn in 1,000 words of content to receive full credit. Anything short of that will not receive full credit. Feel free to make your paper as long as you would like, but it must be at least 1,000 words not including the cover page or resources page.

5. Be sure to cite all sources used to aid in writing the paper. Please do not paste hyperlinks. Create correct citations using citationmachine.net.

6. Points will be deducted for not following the guidelines.

7. Post the concert review under the Concert Review link in Blackboard.
