Welcome to Multicultural Education! For this module, you will watch the following video and read Chapter 1 of Banks (2019).
Then you will participate in the weekly discussion board.
https://youtube.com/embed/OGZYh8xlzPw
This discussion has three (3) parts. To receive full credit you must answer all parts and respond to the posts of at least 2 of your colleagues.
· Identify the three major arguments made by the critics of multicultural education that are discussed and examined in Banks (2019) Chapter 1. How do you personally respond to each of these criticisms? Do you think the author of this book responds adequately to each of these criticisms? Why or why not?
· State, explain, and give reasons for your own position on whether there is a need to implement multicultural education in the nation's schools.
· Make a list of the main variables of the school environment that must be changed in order to implement and institutionalize multicultural education. Discuss which of these variables might be the easiest and the most difficult to change.

This week, we will be getting prepared to complete a proposed (MOCK) mini-case study for the course. You will not actually have to conduct the research! This module will give you the background you need to conduct a case on any topic on multicultural education.
1. Read the background on Case Study in Educational Research https://educationresearch.pressbooks.com/chapter/case-studies
(Erickson, 2020), the Three Approaches to Case Study Methods in Education, The Art of Case Study, and the Overview of Case Study

2. Journal any questions you may be formulating relative to case study.
3. REVISIT this Unit's Reading Assignments. Think about a case (a single case is easier; but you can consider a multiple case study if you're feeling ambitious) that could be hinged on multicultural education. List possible cases in your journal. (If you still have not purchased the text, you may sign in to my account on redshelf.com. The username is [email protected] and the PW is Durm2020! WEEK8
This week, you will work on a mid-term examination. This consists of a paper on any of the below listed topics:
I have provided some PDF's for your consideration. You DO NOT have to utilize any. Also, remember for research papers, references should be no more than 5-10 years old. You will notice that some of the provided have dates beyond 10 years. This are called seminal works. Seminal works are the original studies from which current research is derived. For those of you who may be thinking about going further in your studies, it is always good to find the seminal work in an area.
Provide a thorough examination of role(s) of Whites as it relates to multicultural education. Evaluate any unique contributions or perspectives might they be able to provide. Further, evaluate what potential conflicts may exist. Potential Resources May Include:
Stereotype threat is a real problem in US schools. Stereotyping is the process of making broad generalizations of an entire group based upon the actions of a small percentage of a group (EX. All Black males are good a sports.). Stereotype threat is when a marginalized group starts to prescribe to the belief of the stereotype (EX. There is no way I can do good on this exam because Black children don't test well.) For topic #2, provide a critical examination of stereotype threat in US schools and provide an implication for the future. Discuss research-based methods schools could employ to dismantle stereotype threat from US schools.
Provide a critical examination of any of the following (race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or religion). You must provide an in depth view of an identified problem relevant to your chosen demographic as it relates to PreK-12 education. This should be followed by a research-based strategy or strategies schools can implement to ensure equity and equality for your chosen demographic.
at least 5 references
adherence to APA rules
grammatically sound sentence and paragraph structure
research-based problem and solution(s)
page number adherence (I do not have a required number of pages. This is your preference and should be based upon how many pages it will take to adequately do the job.)
