Purpose
The purpose of this editorial assignment is to have students articulate their understanding of how social media is used to support or oppose controversial social issues for a vulnerable population.
Students will use social media platforms to locate a strongly worded article or blog with a very specific viewpoint. The students will use recent research evidence, facts, and relevant statistics to identify elements of fake news, misinformation, alternative facts, and disinformation campaigns.
Course Outcome
CO 3: Analyze the impact of social media on public perception regarding social policies, advancement of human rights, social, economic, and environmental justice.
CO 4: Assess the integrity and authenticity of the information promoted by various social media outlets.
Requirements
1. This assignment is worth 100 points . It will be graded on the citations, use of Standard English grammar, sentence structure, and overall organization based on the required components as summarized in the directions and grading criteria/rubric.
2. Create your exercise using Microsoft Word.
3. Follow the directions and grading criteria closely. Any questions about your assignment may be posted under the Q & A Forum.
4. The length of the exercise is to be no less than 750 words , excluding the title page and reference pages.
5. APA format is required with both a title and reference page. Use the necessary components of the review as Level 1 headings (upper and lower case, centered, boldface):
Criteria for the Content (Guidelines)
Write a 750-word Editorial addressing the following elements:
1. Select a controversial contemporary socio-political issue.
2. Locate a passionate social media post (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and blogs), focused on the controversial social-political issue. The post must be recent, no more than one month old.
3. Critically analyze the social media post and identify any information that may not be factual and not grounded in research evidence from credible sources.
4. Select a credible newspaper or magazine outlet and write a 750 word (Count does not include reference text) editorial counter argument to the post. The editorial should present your viewpoint (advocate or opposer) on the controversial social issue. Please note that you must take a position in your editorial. You cannot argue a "middle of the road" approach that supports both an advocate and opposer positions.
5. Your editorial must be written in the following format:
a. A short one sentence headliner, that succinctly describes the editorial content.
b. An introduction paragraph briefly summarizing the social media post's viewpoint on the controversial socio-political issue. This paragraph should briefly introduce your viewpoint and state your position.
c. 2-3 paragraphs clearly articulating a well-constructed argument, substantiated by research evidence, facts and relevant statistics to support your position. The editorial must present a counterargument, refuting any disinformation or misinformation you credibly identify as propaganda presented in the social media post . The editorial must use relevant quotes from your research to support or refute the arguments presented in the newspaper article.
d. The editorial must include a conclusion paragraph that identifies social policies meant to combat the social issues. The policies discussed can be helpful or harmful.
