Exam Structure:

Part 1: Short Answer Essays in response to a short case study

Part 2: Select one of the two cases in Part 2, either UEFA Champion League or Governance

Reform in Australian Football and answer the questions that proceed the case that you

selected.

GRADING

• 60% of final mark

o Part 1: Case Study = 40%

o Part 2: Choose only one case study = 60%

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

The responses to the questions must be uploaded to a Turnitin folder created on our Moodle course.

After the exam is uploaded, you will be allowed 24 hours to answer the questions. After 24 hours the

exam will be closed. The answers must be uploaded on the Turnitin folder created on Moodle.

The title of the file should be containing the following information:

Student Name (Surname, First Name) – Student ID – Work Title.

Be aware that this is a Turnitin assignment that automatically checks the similarity of your answers

with ALL sources on the Internet as well as with other students. Be aware that any instances of

similarity may result in an investigation of plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious form of academic

Read the following short case and answer all the questions that follow.

Getting Human Resource Management Right

Justine Pedallots has just been appointed the new CEO of London Bike Events (LBE), a new

nonprofit organization formed through collaboration between London City Council and Cycling

England. Its primary aim is to encourage people to take up cycling as a way of increasing their

fitness. A key aspect of LBE is developing and organizing cycling participation events.

One of Justine’s first tasks is to assemble a small team of paid staff (3) and a pool of event

volunteers (50) to run the first cycling event – an all-day ride from Oxford to the London CBD. The

paid staff positions are a Volunteer Coordinator, an Office Manager / Bookkeeper, and an Event

Development Officer. The volunteers will be used to perform a variety of roles, including

promotions, event day operations, liaising with caterers, equipment repairs, masseurs, and

transportation.

1. Argue in favor of using one of the following recruiting strategies to fill the various paid

positions in the organization. Please fully explain and justify your response. (10 points)

Governance Reform in Australian Football and answer the questions that proceed the case

that you selected (60 points):

Case Study A.: UEFA Champions League:

Read the following short case and answer all the questions below:

1. As noted in the case, distributions to clubs via the Champions League increased from

€23.5 million in 1992/3 to €585 million in 2006/7 to €905 million in 2012/13. Analyze (break

into parts and examine in depth) 3 possible reasons for the increase in distributions.

2. Is the proportion of media revenue higher within UEFA and the Champions League than it

is within European national leagues, or for individual clubs? Analyze (break into parts and

examine in depth) 2 possible reasons that this is true or not true. (15 points)

3. Do the top European clubs earn more from their participation in their national leagues or

from their participation in the UEFA Champions League? Explain the factors involved. (15

points)

4. Debate whether mechanisms to induce or improve competitive balance, like those used in

the National Football League (America) or the Australian Football League, could work in

Europe’s national football leagues. (15 points)

Case Study B.: Governance reform in Australian Football: A perennial challenge?

Read the following short case and answer all the questions below:

1. Analyze the reasons that the Australian federal government initiated the 2003 Review into

the governance of football. (15 points)

2. Illustrate the reasons the FFA was subject to a further review in 2011. (15 points)

3. Compare the Craw Review of 2003 with the 2011 report into the review of the Scottish

Football Association. What similarities and differences are there in the governance and

structural issues of these two football governing bodies? (15 points)

4. Evaluate why governing bodies of sport seem to be in a perpetual state of review,
