Project Title: Smart Central controller for merit-order Controllable Load shedding.

A brief description of the project with clearly defined aims and objectives and what is to be achieved both

practically and academically with particular emphasis on the originality and research challenge. In extreme situations, when the power levels of a storage system drops below certain levels, usually due to loss of utility supply or in off grid systems, the local management System needs to shed some loads. This essentially means to disconnect whole section of load from the local network without consideration of the critical loads. A recent proposal is to introduce controllers in certain loads in the loads (e.g. washing machine, fridge, lighting, etc.) and utilise them to switch loads off more controllably, as needed, with a level of priority. This way, the critical loads will be disconnected last, only if there is extremely severe power shortages. The purpose of this project is to design and build a central controller which will receive signals from the system and disconnect household/commercial etc loads in a merit order, according to the severity of the disturbance.

Project Deliverables

When completing this section, please ensure that clear indications are given of what you expect from the

student to successfully complete the project. Two or three deliverables are required. Assessments are not

deliverables and should not be included here. If ethics approval is required, this should be one of the

deliverables.
