All assignments must be submitted by the date and time specified above. Students are required to submit an electronic copy of their completed assignment via the Assignments section of Canvas and follow any specific instructions. Any change to this instruction will be advised via Canvas. In line with Faculty policy for late submission of coursework, any work submitted up to a week late will be capped at 50%. The following module learning outcomes and professional body learning outcomes are tested in this assessment: reproduced from the module descriptor in Canvas. On successful completion of this module students will be expected, at threshold level, to be able to:

1. Analyze, design and detail reinforced and pre-stressed concrete elements incl. flat slabs and post-tensioned slabs to EC2.

2. Carry out the conceptual design incl. design for stability and robustness of multi-storey concrete framed buildings.

3. Specify sustainable modern concretes incl. Self Compacting Concrete, High Strength Concrete, Admixtures and Additions, etc. in accordance with up-to-date practice.

The above learning outcomes are verified by the assessment task and specific terms below and will be assessed by 100% coursework.

Assessment task and specific terms

This individual assessment is based on the Concrete Centre Competition titled ‘Structural Concrete 2013’ (attached) The competition offers a stimulating challenge and supports the curriculum of civil and structural engineering departments of UK universities. The requirements are limited for a single student submission (max 30 A4 pages plus one A3 drawing) as follows:

1. A conceptual design report: One viable structural solution for the main building, together with their associated column/wall layouts. The solution should comprise sketches with supporting notes outlining the intended load transfer mechanisms, framing and stability functions, and some brief notes on construction methodology. A description of the foundation scheme adopted for the preferred solution with a rationale for the selection. A fully detailed design for the foundation scheme is not required. (max 12 A4 pages)

2. Design calculations for the selected scheme superstructure: Sufficient design calculations by hand (calculation sheet included may be used) to establish the form and size of main structural elements for the chosen scheme. (max 15 A4 pages)

3. One drawing of the selected scheme superstructure: One A3 structural drawing should

include ground floor plan, first floor plan, typical bedroom floor plan, section A-A and RC detail A. The drawing should clearly show the disposition and dimensions of structural elements for estimation purposes. (one A3 page)

4. A sustainability appraisal. (max 3 A4 pages) This provides an opportunity to prepare elements of interest to prospective employers, some of whom are involved in setting and judging the competition. Referencing and citation requirements “You are expected to refer to the indicative bibliography of the module provided in Canvas and the additional bibliographic sources suggested in the lecture notes. In addition, you must undertake your own appropriate further reading and research in relation to the matters addressed in this coursework brief. Evidence of independent reading and research will be rewarded. A list of References must be presented at the end of the report listing all bibliographic sources cited.” Submit an electronic copy to Canvas by the submission date as required.

Assessment Criteria Your submission will be assessed using the weighted assessment criteria as given below, which relate to the specified module and PSRB learning outcomes.
