Question One
One of my favorite movies is called “1917.” This is a British epic war movie that is directed, produced, and co-written by Sam Mendes (Rawle, S., 2019). Released in 2019, the film stars George Mackay and Dean Chapman among other actors. At the beginning of the movie, it is seen that it has been already three devastating years into the World War I which was costly. The German Army seems to have retreated from their position in from the Western Front which was a battle field. This was an elaborate scheme to try and lure enemies into a trap.
These events happened on April 6, 1917 where thousands of soldiers’ lives were lost. In the middle of the movie, two best friends and Lance Corporals, Tom Blake and Will Schofield are tasked to deliver a message to Colonel MacKenzie in order to stop war. These two soldiers had to travel long miles to enemy territory. Tom Blake dies in the process after being stabbed by a German pilot whom they saved from the burning place.
Time was an essence for Will Schofield since he had to make sure he delivers the letter to Colonel MacKenzie. In last past of the movie, the war was stopped and thousands of lives saved even though there were some casualties. Will Schofield met Tom Blake’s brother where he delivered the saddening news of his death. Tom Blake’s brother worked as a doctor in Colonel MacKenzie’s army.
Question Two
The issues and conflicts raised in the movie was that the aftermath of World War I led to the loss of life of various soldiers. Additionally, an issue that was seen was that there was no clear communication between various Battalions. Also, there was an issue where the two soldiers were tasked with a dangerous activity to undertake without any back up. This almost led to the message not being delivered and could lead to a serious war where so many people could have lost their lives in the process.
Question Three
The main theme in the 1917 movie is that the innocence of war destroys. This is depicted when Tom Blake and Will Schofield came across various dead bodies that symbolized the aftermath of war. Also, war destroys families in that in the movie, Will Schofield came across a young woman with a child which shows that the father to the child might have been killed during war. Another theme depicted in the movie is bravery especially by both Blake and Schofield. For instance, Blake saves Schofield’s life when a trench falls on him and saves the German pilot from burning (Rawle, S., 2019). Nonetheless, Blake in the end dies a hero.
Question Four
An actor preparing for this movie, he or she should have a historical understanding of the instances that took place during the World War I. therefore, 1917 is a historical movie. The actor therefore should be able to go back in time and try to relieve the historical moments that happened so that the audience can be able to understand it better.
Question Five
The 1917 movie is seen to target an audience who are interested in a more historical drama and war setting. Additionally, the audience should have a bit of background on what happened during this period and what was the impact.
