Content Instructions
Many Hollywood movies can be analyzed from a sociological standpoint. For this project you are to choose one feature film length movie from the list provided and discuss sociological issues in the movie. Select whichever movie and subject matter you are most interested in. Keep in mind that the list of suggested topics is only a starting point. You may use any topic discussed in our textbook or class that you believe is relevant to the movie. Your paper will need to include a discussion of at least 8 different sociological issues found in the movie.
Format Instructions
The paper will be no less than 6 full pages in length. This paper must be typed and turned in through Canvas. Pages will have the standard 1” top and bottom margins and 1.25” left and right margins, double-spacing, and use a 12-point font. All sociological vocabulary terms used in the paper will be bold. Before turning in the assignment, please make use of the spelling and grammar check tools. Any papers received that do not conform to these guidelines will lose points.
Deadlines
The paper is due on November 24th. It must be submitted no later than the beginning of class that day.
SCORING
Your assignment score will be evaluated based on application of sociological concepts conformity to English writing standards.
Conformity to basic English writing standards – 25% of grade
This is a college level writing assignment. Therefore it is expected that the basic standards of English composition will be used. All papers will have:
· An introduction that provides the purpose, reasons and sociological importance of the paper
· A conclusion that summarizes the main points of the paper
· A logical, interesting sequence (organization) which the reader can follow
· Language that is clear and appropriate. Correct mechanics, grammar, and word usage should be applied to ensure the paper has no more than two misspellings and/or grammatical errors.
Application of Sociological Concepts – 75% of grade
There are seven basic course objectives for our class. From the syllabus they are:
1) Connect the sociological perspective to everyday life situations. This will include being able to illustrate the principle theoretical perspectives and the concept of sociological imagination.
a) Chapter 1 or any application of functionalism, conflict theory, or symbolic interaction theory.
2) Explain and give examples of how humans are cultural beings. This will include how the cultural beings are related to social beings.
a) Chapter 3
3) Explain and give examples of how humans are influenced by social structure. This will include identifying how society is organized into social institutions, social groups, statuses, and roles.
a) Chapters 4 and 6
4) Describe the process of socialization . This will include the ability to explain how individuals learn social expectations and develop a sense of self through interactions.
a) Chapter 5
5) Evaluate how social institutions shape social stability/instability. This will include the ability to give details regarding some if not all of the following institutions: family, religion, education, government, the economy, medicine, and mass media.
a) Chapters 4, 8, 14, 16, and 19
6) Differentiate among the different sources of social inequality. Inequality may be found in social problems on issues of social stratification, global stratification, race, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexuality, and aging.
a) Chapters 9, 11, and 12
7) Explain deviance from a sociological perspective.
a) Chapter 7
You must include a minimum of one term or concept per objective that demonstrates you have met that objective.
Points
The paper is worth 100 points.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
· You must select one of the sixteen movies provided. Any papers received discussing other films will not be graded and a zero will be entered for the grade.
· You should not have to spend money to complete this assignment. If you do not own any of the movies, all may be borrowed from the St. Charles County Public Library. Some may also be borrowed from our campus library. If you do not have DVD playing capabilities, check www.justwatch.com or www.reelgood.com for streaming options for these films.
· To ensure I can follow your logic, you may want to define the term you are applying before providing the example from the movie.
· You will need a reference page if you quote the movie or use any resource for definitions. You may use any citation format (MLA, APA, etc.), but be consistent throughout the paper.
· This is a paper requiring at least 6 pages of sociological analysis. DO NOT SUMMARIZE THE PLOT OF THE MOVIE. If you are concerned about your writing skills, please visit the ACE Center (open 7:30 AM - 9:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 9:00 AM -3:30 PM on Fridays).
