List of Do’s and Don’ts for the Final Summary

Do’s

Don’ts

· Do use the rubric to verify that you have included all required components of the summary

· Don’t lose points by leaving something out! If it is not there, I can’t give you points.

College level, scientific writing:

· Do use proper APA style on the work cited page with citations in proper APA style

· Summary should be double spaced

· No 1st, 2nd or 3rd person – Don’t refer to a person at all within the summary

· Only include factual statements that pertain to the process of movement

· Do check your spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and grammar

College level, scientific writing:

Don’t use other styles for citations on work cited page

· Don’t write a summary that is single spaced

· Don’t use 1st, 2nd or 3rd person

· Don’t make nonfactual statements like

“Movement is the most complex process”

“Movement is an amazing process”

· Don’t include information about the body that does not pertain to the process of movement.

· Don’t skip proof reading your summary for errors

Introduction: Do be sure to write a thorough introduction that pertains to the interaction that takes place during movement.

· Do introduce the main ideas from each section of the summary, providing a brief explanation of:

· The roles of the nervous, muscular and skeletal system in movement, and how they interact to produce movement

· What a motor pathway is and its purpose in producing movement

· What a nerve impulse is and the purpose it serve in producing movement

· The effects of muscle contractions on the bones & joints of the skeleton which allow the body to complete tasks

· Do stick to the facts and verify the accuracy of your explanations

Introduction: Don’t lose points by doing the following:

· Don’t list “what will be discussed” in the summary

· Don’t omit one of the main ideas from a section

· Don’t include extraneous information that does not pertain to movement – stay on topic

· Don’t make nonfactual statements like “Movement is the most complex process”

“Movement is an amazing process”

· Don’t make incorrect statements in your explanations

Motor Pathway:

· Do explain what a motor pathway is and the purpose it serves in producing movements

· Do use your notes and other materials to verify that the motor pathway is described completely and correctly.

Motor Pathway:

· Don’t omit the initial explanation

· Don’t leave out portions of the pathway

· Don’t skip proof reading this section for accuracy

Nerve Impulse:

· Do explain what a nerve impulse is and its purpose in producing movement

· Do use your notes and other materials to verify that the mechanism for how a nerve impulse is initiated in the somas, passed down the axons and transmitted to the next neurons in the pathway is correct.

Nerve Impulse:

· Don’t omit the initial explanation

· Don’t omit parts of this process

· Don’t skip proof reading this section for accuracy

·

·

Conclusion – The complete interaction:

· Do look up and verify that you are identifying the motion at the joint correctly for the action you are trying to complete.

· Do look up which muscles produce the movement you have identified at the joint – Verify!

· Do look up which nerves stimulate the muscles you have identified for that movement – Verify!

· Do write a specific description of interactions that occur between the nerves, muscle and bones when describing the motion at a joint!

· Do include how the nerves interact with the muscles during the movement

· Do include how the muscles interact with the bones during the movement

· Do include how the movement occurs at the articulation points between the bones at the joint

· Do be descriptive and specific in how the bones move at the joint – use directional terms to distinguish between flexion, extension adduction

See full example of kicking a ball on instructions!

Conclusion – The complete interaction:

· Don’t get the motions at the joint wrong. If the motion is wrong than all the muscles and nerves will be wrong too

· Don’t guess at the nerves and muscles needed to produce the specific movements you have identified – use your resources! You may need to name some structures that were not studied in class.

· Don’t create a list the muscles, bones and nerves involved in a motion and think that you are done! That is only a rough organization of the facts you need to write a description of the interaction between these structures. Example of what NOT to do: “To flex the knee involves the sciatic nerve. It synapses with the 3 hamstrings, the semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris, which are connected to the the tibia, fibula and femur.”

· Don’t describe the anatomy in place of how these structures interact…. If you describe how the knee is put together and how the muscles attach… ok … then describe how they interact. (Description of the anatomy is not necessary)

· Don’t describe the interaction between the nerves, muscles and bones in the wrong order! The interaction is specific and occurs in a specific sequence.
