Ever wonder why some people seem to be very successful, highly motivated individuals? Where does the energy, the drive, or the direction come from? Motivation is an area of psychology that has gotten a great deal of attention, especially in the recent years. The reason is because we all want to be successful, we all want direction and drive, and we all want to be seen as motivated.

Introduction
Why did you get out of bed today? Sometimes, it is hard to see our true motivations because our daily lives are quite routine. So, for a moment, imagine your life without alarm clocks, cell phones, or schedules. If you had a day with unstructured time, what would you do first when you woke up?
Biological requirements for maintaining your body would likely
come first, such as thirst, urination, keeping warm or cool, and eating.
The human body can live for only 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without
food.
But a human can live a lifetime without sex, even though it is required to propagate
our species. Once beyond biological needs, you may soon want to talk to someone you
care about or eventually feel the need to accomplish something during your day. How
can we capture the many reasons for our decisions to act?

Introduction
- Motivation is described as an inner state that energizes people toward the fulfillment of a goal.
Importantly, motivation is considered to arise internally, as an act of will, rather than an external force compelling you to take action (like pulling your hand back from a hot stove).

- Motivation is also related to an intention or outcome that you desire; so you are motivated to achieve some goal or state, such as being financially independent, or in a happy relationship.
At the base level, a motive is the pursuit of pleasure in some form and the avoidance of pain or displeasure.

- Just about any goal can be termed a motive as long as it motivates a person to pursue it for any reason.
- Throughout the history of psychology, several theories of motivation have been proposed.
Theories of motivation try to explain how and why we are energized to move toward specific goals.

- Extrinsic
- Intrinsic
There are several distinct theories of motivation we will discuss in this class. Some include basic biological forces, while others seem to transcend concrete explanation. Let's talk about seven major theories of motivation.

Evolutionary Theory
- Charles Darwin's theory of Natural Selection indicated that individuals best adapted to their environment will be more likely to survive and reproduce, passing their favorable characteristics on to the next generation.
- As a result, a beneficial trait (one with high adaptive value) tends to become more common in succeeding generations. Eventually almost all individuals in the population will have the beneficial characteristic.
So, Darwin believed that many behaviors were characteristics that could be passed on.

Instinct Theory
- William James thought that motivation by instincts was important for human behavior. These included such things as fear, anger, love, shame, and cleanliness.
- In the early 1900’s, Psychologist William McDougall was one of the first to write about the instinct theory of motivation. He suggested that instinctive behavior was composed of three key elements: perception, behavior, and emotion. He also outlined 18 different instincts that included curiosity, the maternal instinct, laughter, comfort, sex, and hunger.
- Sigmund Freud's theory of personality is based on instincts that motivate sex and aggression. It’s what he called life and death instincts.
Instinct theory is derived from our biological make-up. We've all seen spider's webs and perhaps even witnessed a spider in the tedious job of creating its home and trap. We've all seen birds in their nests, feeding their young or painstakingly placing the twigs in place to form their new home. How do spiders know how to spin webs? How do birds now how to build nests?
The answer is biology. All creatures are born with specific innate knowledge about how to survive. Animals are born with the capacity and often times knowledge of how to survive by spinning webs, building nests, avoiding danger, and reproducing. These innate tendencies are preprogrammed at birth, they are in our genes, and even if the spider never saw a web before, never witnessed its creation, it would still know how to create one.
Humans have the same types of innate tendencies. Babies are born with a unique ability that allows them to survive; they are born with the ability to cry. Without this, how would others know when to feed the baby, know when he needed changing, or when she wanted attention and affection? Crying allows a human infant to survive. We are also born with particular reflexes which promote survival. The most important of these include sucking, swallowing, coughing, blinking. Newborns can perform physical movements to avoid pain; they will turn their head if touched on their cheek and search for a nipple (rooting reflex); and they will grasp an object that touches the palm of their hands.

Instinct Theory
- The instinct theory of motivation suggests that human behaviors are motivated by underlying biological instincts. These instincts are unlearned and tend to be universal in expression.
Instinct Theory
- Instincts are complex, inherited behavior patterns characteristic of a species.
- To be considered a true instinct, the behavior must be stereotypical, performed automatically in the same way by all members of a species in response to a specific stimulus.
Examples of instinct theory include a dog shaking after it gets wet, a sea turtle seeking out the ocean after hatching, or a bird migrating prior to the winter season., these are also called fixed-action patterns.
Another example of an instinct was investigated by animal behaviorist, Konrad Lorenz, who worked with baby geese. These and other birds form an attachment to the first moving object they see or hear soon after birth by following that object, which is usually their mother. This behavior is known as imprinting. When Lorenz was the first moving object they saw, the baby birds followed him.

Problems with Instinct Theory
- While instinct theory could be used to explain some behaviors, critics felt that it had some major limitations. Among these criticisms:
- Not all behaviors can be explained by instincts
- Instincts are not something that can be readily observed and scientifically tested
- Simply labeling something as an instinct does nothing to explain why some behaviors appear in certain instances but not in others.
Drive Reduction Theory
- According to Clark Hull's drive reduction theory, behavior is motivated by the need to reduce drives such as hunger, thirst, or sex. The need is a motivated state caused by a physiological deficit, such as a lack of food or water. This need activates a drive, a state of psychological tension induced by a need, which motivates us to eat or drink, for example.
According to Clark Hull (1943, 1952), humans have internal internal biological needs which motivate us to perform a certain way. These needs, or drives, are defined by Hull as internal states of arousal or tension which must be reduced.
Generally, the greater the need, the stronger the drive. For example: Eating food or drinking water reduces the need by satisfying our hunger or quenching our thirst, and our body returns to its state of homeostasis.
Homeostasis is the body's tendency to maintain an internal steady state of metabolism, to stay in balance.

Drive Reduction Theory
- Drive reduction theory accounts well at least to some extent for primary motives such as hunger, thirst, pain, and sex.
However, this biologically based theory does not account as well for secondary motives such as achievement, affiliation, autonomy, curiosity, power, and play that are social in nature.

Arousal Theory
- What explains people's needs to climb mountains, bungee jump, or ride roller coasters?
- Arousal is the level of alertness, wakefulness, and activation caused by activity in the central nervous system. The optimal level of arousal varies with the person and the activity.
Similar to Hull's Drive Reduction Theory, Arousal theory states that we are driven to maintain a certain level of arousal in order to feel comfortable. Arousal refers to a state of emotional, intellectual, and physical activity. It is different from the above theory, however, because it doesn't rely on only a reduction of tension, but a balanced amount. It also does better to explain why people climb mountains, go to school, or watch sad movies.

Incentive Theory
- Primary motives push us to satisfy our biologic needs. But we are also pulled by environmental factors, which have little to do with biology.
- An incentive is a positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates behavior, pulling us toward a goal.
Secondary motives, motives we learn to desire, are learned through society's pull. Getting an A on your Psychology examination is an incentive that motivates you to study hard.

Humanistic Theory
- Humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow categorized needs then arranged them in order of priority, starting with powerful physiological needs, such as the needs for food and water.
- His hierarchy is often pictured as a pyramid (Figure 12.1).
Humanistic theory is perhaps the most well know theory of motivation. According to this theory, humans are driven to achieve their maximum potential and will always do so unless obstacles are placed in their way. These obstacles include hunger, thirst, financial problems, safety issues, or anything else that takes our focus away from maximum psychological growth.

Maslow’s Hierarchy
The best way to describe this theory is to utilize the famous pyramid developed by Abraham Maslow (1970) called the Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow believed that humans have specific needs that must be met and that if lower level needs go unmet, we can not possible strive for higher level needs. The Hierarchy of Needs shows that at the lower level, we must focus on basic issues such as food, sleep, and safety. Without food, without sleep, how could we possible focus on the higher level needs such as respect, education, and recognition?
Throughout our lives, we work toward achieving the top of the pyramid, self actualization, or the realization of all of our potential. As we move up the pyramid, however, things get in the way which slow us down and often knock us backward. Imagine working toward the respect and recognition of your colleagues and suddenly finding yourself out of work and homeless. Suddenly, you are forced backward and can no longer focus your attention on your work due to the need for finding food and shelter for you and your family.
According to Maslow, nobody has ever reached the peak of his pyramid. We all may strive for it and some may even get close, but no one has achieved full self-actualization. Self-actualization means a complete understanding of who you are, a sense of completeness, of being the best person you could possibly be. To have achieved this goal is to stop living, for what is there to strive for if you have learned everything about yourself, if you have experienced all that you can, and if there is no way left for you to grow emotionally, intellectually, or spiritually.

Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation
- Why do we do the things we do? What is it the drives our behaviors?
Psychologists have proposed a number of different ways of thinking about motivation that we have looked at. However, psychologist also
including one method that involves looking at whether motivation arises from outside (extrinsic) or inside (intrinsic) the individual.

Extrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic motivation occurs when we are motivated to perform a behavior or engage in an activity in order to earn a reward or avoid a punishment.
Examples of behaviors that are the result of intrinsic motivation include:
Participating in a sport because you find the activity enjoyable
Solving a word puzzle because you find the challenge fun and interesting
Playing a game because you find it exciting

- Intrinsic motivation involves engaging in a behavior because it is personally rewarding; essentially, performing an activity for its own sake rather than the desire for some external reward.

So, the primary difference between the two types of motivation is that extrinsic motivation arises from outside of the individual while intrinsic motivation arises from within.

Now that you’ve answered the questions, it’s time to tally up your responses and find your motivation type. Count up your answers in terms of B, Y, R, G symbols. Although each type may apply to you to a degree, the type with the most points is your dominant motivation type. If there is a tie, you are equally motivated by a variety of factors. Read both types because both pertain to you. Lucky you, you have a lot of choices to pick from.
B: Praise-oriented achiever
You may be strongly motivated by receiving recognition in your work. In most things you do, you probably like to be in charge, in the spotlight and enjoy influencing others to see things your way. You are likely to be quite ambitious and feel driven to succeed and enjoy positions of power. Occupations that you might consider exploring include corporate leadership jobs where you are managing others, as well as lecturer, professor, lawyer, head of industry, lobbyist, politician or consultant.
Y: Independence-seeking creatives
- You prefer to have tons of freedom and flexibility in whatever you do. Sure it’s swell to earn money and receive accolades, but you would never be motivated to trade in freedom and independence for a very predictable routine. It is important to you to be able to be creative and innovative when solving problems. Careers that might appeal to you are artist, writer, musician, photographer, publicist, graphic designer, small business owner or creative entrepreneur.
G: World-improving helpers
You are motivated by a need to help others and better the world. Interacting positively with other people on a daily basis is essential to your happiness. It’s more critical to you to help people than it is to make money or receive praise. Careers that might appeal to you are physical therapist, nonprofit positions, doctor, flight attendant, social worker, personal trainer, teacher, nurse, veterinarian, travel agent, armed service member, firefighter or mediator.
R: Reward-driven responsives
You like to be rewarded for what you do by the factor that you consider to be most motivating: money. After all, isn’t that what you’re really working for? You tend to be very effective at any job, especially when your paycheck is directly tied to how hard you work. Jobs that might appeal to you are found in sales departments of companies where you can do what you do best, including marketing, ad sales, stock investing, sales management, high-end retail sales or founding your own startup.
Why Set Goals?
If you want to accomplish as much as possible — both personally and professionally — you must commit to a solid plan, says Annie Fongheiser, MS, a licensed psychotherapist and area chair of the psychology program for the College of Social Sciences at the University of Phoenix, Charlotte Campus.
“Goal setting is an inherent component of human behavior,” Fongheiser emphasizes. Here, she describes four benefits of setting reasonable personal and professional objectives:
Mental Health Improves
- Completing even the most routine tasks triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter essential to healthy brain activity. “This is part of the brain’s reward function,” Fongheiser explains. “That dopamine release provides us with a positive sense of well-being, which in turn makes task completion an inherent biological drive.”
- Most people set goals throughout their lives without even realizing it, she points out.
“For example, grocery shopping involves a series of steps to meet that goal,” she says. “You clip coupons, you choose a store and then you actually shop. We do all of that automatically, but the same process is used for more complex, less routine goal setting, too.”

Motivation Builds
- The same brain chemistry that drives you to check off items on your to-do list can help keep you inspired.
- “Because of the dopamine reward we receive, each goal we reach becomes personally satisfying, and we naturally want more of that,” Fongheiser says. “It can be addictive in a positive way, and that can lead to an inherent sense of accomplishment that normally continues to build on itself.”
- She recommends setting simple, easily attainable goals that you can accomplish rather than ones that are too broad or out of reach. “Use the acronym SMART — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely — when setting your goals,” she stresses.
- For instance, “maybe you ultimately want to go to graduate school, but if that’s too intimidating, your first goal could be to complete your associate degree within two years,” she says. “Once you’ve accomplished that, your next goal could be the bachelor’s degree within another two years, and so on.” Fongheiser says she used this strategy in school.

- The more goals you reach, the better you’ll feel about yourself, she maintains. “Often, depression, non-action and other dysfunctional behaviors contribute to a lack of confidence,” she says. “But making and executing a plan to improve [your] life can counteract that.”
- Instead of dwelling on insecurities, self-doubt and fear of failure, Fongheiser recommends focusing on all you’ve already accomplished, which can lay the foundation for more positive goal setting.

Just deciding to go back to college requires a leap of faith, and I always tell my students that they’ve already accomplished a huge goal just by being there,” she notes.

- Each goal you reach opens up a realm of new possibilities, Fongheiser emphasizes.
- “We all make and adjust many goals throughout our lives — going to school, getting married, choosing a career,” she says. “Each of these decisions can lead to a new set of opportunities we wouldn’t have otherwise seen.”
For example, realizing the goal of moving to another city after graduation can lead to more employment opportunities. “With each success we realize in accomplishing life’s minor, less routine goals,” she notes, “the more likely we are to approach future, complex goals with confidence and enthusiasm.”

Emotions seem to rule our daily lives. We make decisions based on whether we are happy, angry, sad, bored, or frustrated. We choose activities and hobbies based on the emotions they incite.

What are emotions?
- The mainstream definition of emotion refers to a feeling state involving thoughts, physiological changes, and an outward expression or behavior.
What is emotion? A feeling? Then what is a feeling? These terms are difficult to define and even more difficult to understand completely. People have been attempting to understand this phenomenon for thousands of years, and will most likely debate for a thousand more. Today we will look at the various theories related to the acquisition of emotion.
The mainstream definition of emotion refers to a feeling state involving thoughts, physiological changes, and an outward expression or behavior. But what comes first? The thought? The physiological arousal? The behavior? Or does emotion exist in a vacuum, whether or not these other components are present? There are five theories which attempt to understand why we experience emotion.

James-Lange Theory
- The James-Lange theory of emotion argues that an event causes physiological arousal first and then we interpret this arousal. Only after our interpretation of the arousal can we experience emotion. If the arousal is not noticed or is not given any thought, then we will not experience any emotion based on this event.
EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. You notice these physiological changes and interpret them as your body's preparation for a fearful situation. You then experience fear.

Cannon-Bard Theory
- The Cannon-Bard theory argues that we experience physiological arousal and emotional at the same time, but gives no attention to the role of thoughts or outward behavior.
EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. At the same time as these physiological changes occur you also experience the emotion of fear.

Schachter-Singer Theory
- According to this theory, an event causes physiological arousal first. You must then identify a reason for this arousal and then you are able to experience and label the emotion.
You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. Upon noticing this arousal you realize that is comes from the fact that you are walking down a dark alley by yourself. This behavior is dangerous and therefore you feel the emotion of fear.

Lazarus Theory
- Lazarus Theory states that a thought must come before any emotion or physiological arousal. In other words, you must first think about your situation before you can experience an emotion.
EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you think it may be a mugger so you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens and at the same time experience fear.

Facial Feedback Theory
- According to the facial feedback theory, emotion is the experience of changes in our facial muscles. In other words, when we smile, we then experience pleasure, or happiness. When we frown, we then experience sadness. it is the changes in our facial muscles that cue our brains and provide the basis of our emotions. Just as there are an unlimited number of muscle configurations in our face, so to are there a seemingly unlimited number of emotions.
EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and your eyes widen, your teeth clench and your brain interprets these facial changes as the expression of fear. Therefore you experience the emotion of fear.

- "An emotion is a complex psychological state that involves three distinct components: a subjective experience, a physiological response, and a behavioralor expressive response."

In addition to understanding exactly what emotions are, researchers have also tried to identify and classify the different types of emotions. In 1972, psychologist Paul Eckman suggested that there are six basic emotions that are universal throughout human cultures: fear, disgust, anger, surprise, happiness, and sadness. In 1999, he expanded this list to include a number of other basic emotions including embarrassment, excitement, contempt, shame, pride, satisfaction, and amusement.
During the 1980s, Robert Plutchik introduced another emotion classification system known as the "wheel of emotions." This model demonstrated how different emotions can be combined or mixed together, much the way an artist mixes primary colors to create other colors. Plutchik suggested that there are 8 primary emotional dimensions: happiness vs. sadness, anger vs. fear, trust vs. disgust, and surprise vs. anticipation. These emotions can then be combined in a variety of ways. For example, happiness and anticipation might combine to create excitement.
In order to better understand what emotions are, let's focus on their three key elements.

The Subjective Experience
- While experts believe that there are a number of basic universal emotions that are experienced by people all over the world regardless of background or culture, researchers also believe that the experience of emotion can be highly subjective.
While we might have broad labels for certain emotions such as 'angry,' 'sad,' or 'happy,' your own unique experience of these emotions is probably much more multi-dimensional. Consider anger. Is all anger the same? Your own experience might range from mild annoyance to blinding rage.

The Subjective Experience
- Plus, we don't always experience 'pure' forms of each emotion.
- Mixed emotions over different events or situations in our lives are common.
When faced with starting a new job, you might feel both excited and nervous. Getting married or having a child might be marked by a wide variety of emotions ranging from joy to anxiety. These emotions might occur simultaneously, or you might feel them one after another.

The Physiological Response
- If you've ever felt your stomach lurch from anxiety or your heart palpate with fear, then you realize that emotions also cause strong physiological reactions.
- Many of the physical reactions you experience during an emotion such as sweating palms, racing heartbeat, or rapid breathing are controlled by the sympathetic division, a branch of the autonomic nervous system.
The Physiological Response
The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary body responses such as blood flow and digestion.
The sympathetic nervous system is charged with controlling the body's fight-or-flight reactions. When facing a threat, these responses automatically prepare your body to flee from danger or face the threat head-on.

The Physiological Response
- While early studies of the physiology of emotion tended to focus on these autonomic responses, more recent research has targeted the brain's role in emotions.
- Brain scans have shown that the amygdala, part of the limbic system, plays an important role in emotion and fear in particular.
The amygdala itself is a tiny, almond-shaped structure that has been linked to motivational states such as hunger and thirst as well as memory and emotion. Researchers have used brain imaging to show that when people are shown threatening images, the amygdala becomes activated. Damage to the amygdala has also been shown to impair the fear response.

The Behavioral Response
- The final component is perhaps one that you are most familiar with – the actual expression of emotion. We spend a significant amount of time interpreting the emotional expressions of the people around us.
- Our ability to accurately understand these expressions is tied to what psychologists call emotional intelligence and these expressions play a major part in our overall body language.
Researchers believe that many expressions are universal, such as a smile indicating happiness or pleasure or a frown indicating sadness or displeasure. Cultural rules also play an important role in how we express and interpret emotions. In Japan, for example, people tend to mask displays of fear or disgust when in the presence of authority figure.

Emotions vs. Moods
- In everyday language, people often use the terms 'emotions' and 'moods' interchangeably, but psychologists actually make distinctions between the two. How do they differ?
- An emotion is normally quite short-lived, but intense.
- Emotions are also likely to have a definite and identifiable cause.
For example, after disagreeing with a friend over politics, you might feel angry for a short period of time. A mood on the other hand is usually much milder than an emotion, but longer-lasting. In many cases, it can be difficult to identify the specific cause of a mood. For example, you might find yourself feeling gloomy for several days without any clearly identifiable reason.

There are several distinct theories of motivation we will discuss in this class. Some include basic biological forces, while others seem to transcend concrete explanation. Let's talk about seven major theories of motivation.

Instinct theory is derived from our biological make-up. We've all seen spider's webs and perhaps even witnessed a spider in the tedious job of creating its home and trap. We've all seen birds in their nests, feeding their young or painstakingly placing the twigs in place to form their new home. How do spiders know how to spin webs? How do birds now how to build nests?
The answer is biology. All creatures are born with specific innate knowledge about how to survive. Animals are born with the capacity and often times knowledge of how to survive by spinning webs, building nests, avoiding danger, and reproducing. These innate tendencies are preprogrammed at birth, they are in our genes, and even if the spider never saw a web before, never witnessed its creation, it would still know how to create one.
Humans have the same types of innate tendencies. Babies are born with a unique ability that allows them to survive; they are born with the ability to cry. Without this, how would others know when to feed the baby, know when he needed changing, or when she wanted attention and affection? Crying allows a human infant to survive. We are also born with particular reflexes which promote survival. The most important of these include sucking, swallowing, coughing, blinking. Newborns can perform physical movements to avoid pain; they will turn their head if touched on their cheek and search for a nipple (rooting reflex); and they will grasp an object that touches the palm of their hands.

Examples of instinct theory include a dog shaking after it gets wet, a sea turtle seeking out the ocean after hatching, or a bird migrating prior to the winter season., these are also called fixed-action patterns.
Another example of an instinct was investigated by animal behaviorist, Konrad Lorenz, who worked with baby geese. These and other birds form an attachment to the first moving object they see or hear soon after birth by following that object, which is usually their mother. This behavior is known as imprinting. When Lorenz was the first moving object they saw, the baby birds followed him.

According to Clark Hull (1943, 1952), humans have internal internal biological needs which motivate us to perform a certain way. These needs, or drives, are defined by Hull as internal states of arousal or tension which must be reduced.
Generally, the greater the need, the stronger the drive. For example: Eating food or drinking water reduces the need by satisfying our hunger or quenching our thirst, and our body returns to its state of homeostasis.
Homeostasis is the body's tendency to maintain an internal steady state of metabolism, to stay in balance.

However, this biologically based theory does not account as well for secondary motives such as achievement, affiliation, autonomy, curiosity, power, and play that are social in nature.

Similar to Hull's Drive Reduction Theory, Arousal theory states that we are driven to maintain a certain level of arousal in order to feel comfortable. Arousal refers to a state of emotional, intellectual, and physical activity. It is different from the above theory, however, because it doesn't rely on only a reduction of tension, but a balanced amount. It also does better to explain why people climb mountains, go to school, or watch sad movies.

Secondary motives, motives we learn to desire, are learned through society's pull. Getting an A on your Psychology examination is an incentive that motivates you to study hard.

Humanistic theory is perhaps the most well know theory of motivation. According to this theory, humans are driven to achieve their maximum potential and will always do so unless obstacles are placed in their way. These obstacles include hunger, thirst, financial problems, safety issues, or anything else that takes our focus away from maximum psychological growth.

The best way to describe this theory is to utilize the famous pyramid developed by Abraham Maslow (1970) called the Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow believed that humans have specific needs that must be met and that if lower level needs go unmet, we can not possible strive for higher level needs. The Hierarchy of Needs shows that at the lower level, we must focus on basic issues such as food, sleep, and safety. Without food, without sleep, how could we possible focus on the higher level needs such as respect, education, and recognition?
Throughout our lives, we work toward achieving the top of the pyramid, self actualization, or the realization of all of our potential. As we move up the pyramid, however, things get in the way which slow us down and often knock us backward. Imagine working toward the respect and recognition of your colleagues and suddenly finding yourself out of work and homeless. Suddenly, you are forced backward and can no longer focus your attention on your work due to the need for finding food and shelter for you and your family.
According to Maslow, nobody has ever reached the peak of his pyramid. We all may strive for it and some may even get close, but no one has achieved full self-actualization. Self-actualization means a complete understanding of who you are, a sense of completeness, of being the best person you could possibly be. To have achieved this goal is to stop living, for what is there to strive for if you have learned everything about yourself, if you have experienced all that you can, and if there is no way left for you to grow emotionally, intellectually, or spiritually.

Emotions seem to rule our daily lives. We make decisions based on whether we are happy, angry, sad, bored, or frustrated. We choose activities and hobbies based on the emotions they incite.

What is emotion? A feeling? Then what is a feeling? These terms are difficult to define and even more difficult to understand completely. People have been attempting to understand this phenomenon for thousands of years, and will most likely debate for a thousand more. Today we will look at the various theories related to the acquisition of emotion.
The mainstream definition of emotion refers to a feeling state involving thoughts, physiological changes, and an outward expression or behavior. But what comes first? The thought? The physiological arousal? The behavior? Or does emotion exist in a vacuum, whether or not these other components are present? There are five theories which attempt to understand why we experience emotion.

EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. You notice these physiological changes and interpret them as your body's preparation for a fearful situation. You then experience fear.

In addition to understanding exactly what emotions are, researchers have also tried to identify and classify the different types of emotions. In 1972, psychologist Paul Eckman suggested that there are six basic emotions that are universal throughout human cultures: fear, disgust, anger, surprise, happiness, and sadness. In 1999, he expanded this list to include a number of other basic emotions including embarrassment, excitement, contempt, shame, pride, satisfaction, and amusement.
During the 1980s, Robert Plutchik introduced another emotion classification system known as the "wheel of emotions." This model demonstrated how different emotions can be combined or mixed together, much the way an artist mixes primary colors to create other colors. Plutchik suggested that there are 8 primary emotional dimensions: happiness vs. sadness, anger vs. fear, trust vs. disgust, and surprise vs. anticipation. These emotions can then be combined in a variety of ways. For example, happiness and anticipation might combine to create excitement.
In order to better understand what emotions are, let's focus on their three key elements.

While we might have broad labels for certain emotions such as 'angry,' 'sad,' or 'happy,' your own unique experience of these emotions is probably much more multi-dimensional. Consider anger. Is all anger the same? Your own experience might range from mild annoyance to blinding rage.

When faced with starting a new job, you might feel both excited and nervous. Getting married or having a child might be marked by a wide variety of emotions ranging from joy to anxiety. These emotions might occur simultaneously, or you might feel them one after another.

The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary body responses such as blood flow and digestion.
The sympathetic nervous system is charged with controlling the body's fight-or-flight reactions. When facing a threat, these responses automatically prepare your body to flee from danger or face the threat head-on.

The amygdala itself is a tiny, almond-shaped structure that has been linked to motivational states such as hunger and thirst as well as memory and emotion. Researchers have used brain imaging to show that when people are shown threatening images, the amygdala becomes activated. Damage to the amygdala has also been shown to impair the fear response.

Researchers believe that many expressions are universal, such as a smile indicating happiness or pleasure or a frown indicating sadness or displeasure. Cultural rules also play an important role in how we express and interpret emotions. In Japan, for example, people tend to mask displays of fear or disgust when in the presence of authority figure.

For example, after disagreeing with a friend over politics, you might feel angry for a short period of time. A mood on the other hand is usually much milder than an emotion, but longer-lasting. In many cases, it can be difficult to identify the specific cause of a mood. For example, you might find yourself feeling gloomy for several days without any clearly identifiable reason.
