Formal Outline

Follow the structure of this sentence-by-sentence outline to ensure a well-organized and complete research paper. This outline follows the same structure that you developed for essay one and two; however, each subtopic paragraph of the research paper requires the inclusion of both a primary and one or two secondary source quotes and a discussion synthesizing the material before closing the paragraph. So each subtopic paragraph will be longer including nine-to-eleven sentences rather than seven sentences. Furthermore, the concession and refutation paragraph seven will be developed with a separate paragraph for each: the concession in Paragraph VII and the refutation in Paragraph VIII. These two paragraphs require a substantial addition because you will select one of the secondary source articles from your working bibliography to analyze in both of these paragraphs. Select the article that analyzed the story effectively, but that you disagree with in some ways. In the concession, you will recognize the strength of the essay and include a quote from it. In the refutation you will refute a flaw in this essay and assert why your interpretation more fully develops the author's purpose. You are required to submit the entire outline, but paragraphs I, III, IV, and VII are required to be assigned a peer review partner. The following document provides a sample introduction and body paragraph to serve as a model for how to complete the formal outline.

Secondary Source Documentation and Integration of Quotes with MLA style.

Refer to this document for examples of more advanced use of MLA style citations for indirect quotes. An indirect quote occurs when the source you are quoting includes a quote from another source. You will also find a partial paragraph demonstrating how to summarize parts of the short story to prepare the reader for a secondary source quote. A sample topic sentence for the Concession paragraph VII is included as well. Note that in your final research paper each paragraph should be indented one tab or 5 spaces from the left margin and be double-spaced. These examples are not complete paragraphs so they are not indented.
