Monopoly

There are a few companies, such as Microsoft and Google who have moved into many different areas of computing, such as operating systems, application software, cloud software, search, and more, and some of these companies have been accused of Monopolistic procedures.

NOTE: for this discussion, “Monopolistic” is defined as “exclusive control of a commodity or service in a particular market, or a control that makes possible the manipulation of prices” (Dictionary.com).

1. Is there a risk for the consumer or for businesses if one company is involved with so many different aspects of computing?

2. Should this be prohibited, or should the natural order of the free market be trusted to prevent areas of computing from being monopolized by one company?

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being monopolistic?
