Paper 1 - Preliminary Argument Paper

ENG 120 – Preliminary Argument Paper– Spring 2019

Purpose: Before you begin the research paper, you should attempt a trial run. Pick a topic that you want to write about and write an argument for why this would make a good research topic. What about it matters? What about it is being ignored or unexplored? Why would a general academic audience care about this topic? While you do not need to directly ask and answer these questions, they should be answered in the course of your paper. Basically, this is a tryout for your topic for the final research paper. You need to find out, before you settle on the topic, if you are on the right course.

At this point, you do not need to have the topic completely narrowed down, but you do need to be working on narrowing your topic as you write this paper. You can treat this as though it is a bit of freewriting, getting to the point as you are writing it. No sources are required for this paper, but you may use them if you have them.

Format: Paper 1 will be a minimum of 3 full pages, in MLA format. Font should be 12pt. Times New Roman with one-inch margins, and the paper should be double spaced. The first four lines of the paper should be your name, the instructor’s name, the course, and the date (formatted day month year, e.g. 13 August 2013). The fifth line should be the title of the paper (not the assignment) centered.

Grading: This is an odd assignment in that it will not be graded in a traditional sense. Yes, points will come off for sloppy writing an errors, and you need to correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation, but because of the exploratory nature of the paper, worry less about what is right, and worry more about plumbing the depths of your mind.

Restricted topics: Remember, you may write on these topics, but they must be specifically narrow and researchable/arguable topics. You need to clear these topics with me before beginning the project.
