The Pashtuns are a tribal group scattered in today’s Afghanistan and western Pakistan. They were forever causing problems for the Safavids and the Moguls. Today they continue to assert themselves as many of the Taliban members are recruited from among the Pashtun people.

Wars, you must understand, are generally very expensive. These expansions and the need to police the new conquests and secure them against rebellion drained the Mogul treasury. What wealth the conquests brought in (new taxes, captured treasures) were not sufficient in this case to offset the initial outlay.
The expanded Empire was also now overwhelmingly Hindu ruled over by a Muslim dynasty.
To make matters worse, after Aurangzeb’s death, three of his sons would battle it out for the throne. They exhausted the empire and weakened the ruling family.

After Aurangzeb’s conquests the Mogul authority extended over the majority of the Indian sub‐continent. This would have been an unwieldy kingdom to rule, even if the Moguls had not fallen into civil conflict. Years of civil war and the weakening of royal authority made that an almost impossible task. To make matters worse for the Moguls all of this is happening as European power is on the rise and the European presence in India is growing.
