In this module, you will study on what to do with evidence and appraisal of the evidence.  In addition, you will study clinical practice guidelines related to applying evidence to nursing practice.

Module Objectives

After active participation in this learning module, the learner will:

Describe strategies that individuals use to reduce uncertainty when making decisions.

Discuss characteristics that should be appraised when evaluating qualitative and quantitative designs.

 

**** Appraisal Tip:

Finding the framework for a study may present with some challenges when first learning this skill.  Consider the following: Sometimes the framework is physiological.  This is explained in the chapter 9 readings/videos that walk you through step by step how to do the appraisal.  In the video found in chapter 9 at  https://www.softchalkcloud.com/lesson/files/B1wEupK7tG9DjJ/index.html, it explains that some frameworks are physical, such as infection control and physical activity.   ** Some researchers do not make it clear what the framework is that they are using.  However, every research study does have a framework.  Other examples might be pain management, interprofessional communication, or oxygenation principles. Further Appraisal Tips:   

• Be sure you are using research articles for your research appraisal and research review for the assignments.  This is all explained in the reading assignments and video guide for the research appraisal.  If you are not sure, please email Nancyruth and ask her if the sources you are using are research articles.  
• Please read your feedback for the EBP Prep Worksheet to see any areas of improvement needed and to see what you did correctly!

You only need to do one research appraisal for this course and it may be either qualitative or quantitative.  Student choice which one as this really can vary depending on the topic you select!  :)
