Module Four
Learning Objectives By the end of this module, you will meet these learning objectives:
Module Overview One motivational strategy you will use to guide you toward success is goal setting. Goal setting is a major
motivational factor in your success in college, as your goals can help dene the various actions, behaviors,
and activities you participate in daily. Without goals to guide you in your daily decision-making process, you
may accidentally engage in activities that are not focused on success. Crafting high-quality short- and long-
term goals will help you continue the process of taking ownership of your academic journey.
This week’s module will challenge you to create your own academic personal mission statement and short-
term goals. Your academic personal mission statement will focus on long-term accomplishments, career
prospects, and the desire to help others in your life. Thinking broadly about your academic journey will allow
you to better understand the process and the impact it will have on your professional and personal lives.
After determining where you want to be a few years from now, you will have the chance to create short-term
goals that will help you understand the steps, actions, and behaviors you need to engage in every day to
ensure progress in achieving your personal mission statement goal. Think of it this way: Your short-term
goals should specically detail what you need to accomplish in the present in order to achieve your personal
mission statement goal in the future!
Goal setting is not a “one and done” process! This week’s assignments will challenge you to begin thinking
about your goals, but you will have additional opportunities to rene and focus these goals later in this
course. Remember to use the feedback given to you from your instructor to develop quality, detailed, and
specic goals that will promote positive academic behaviors throughout your entire educational journey.
