Module 7 & 8 Combined: Training Design and Strategic Alignment Memo

You will see it as an assignment, but there will be no points associated. Attendance is not mandatory but may be helpful – bring questions.
Overview:
You will need to go back and read and consult Chapter 4. Most of the questions will be reflected back in this chapter.
As you know, any training program should be aligned with the objectives and needs of the business. The purpose of this assignment is to find the training strategy that aligns with the business strategy of the business you interviewed. You received some amount of information from the needs assessment.
· Some interviews weren't very helpful - the person may have said "yes, no, maybe" and it was very short.
· Other interviews were confusing. The business had a training plan already in place, but they did give you a need of some other type of training.
· Other interviews said they had training and didn't need anymore.
· Other interviews gave extensive lists of what they needed.
· There were a few in-between.
The tough part now is to decide what type of training do you think would be most helpful for them, even if they didn't explicitly state something. We will figure this out together.
On page 158 of your text, it states the purpose of training is "to help employees learn so they can perform their jobs successfully." On that page it goes on to say there are five conditions to be present for learning to occur:
1. providing opportunities for trainees to practice and receive feedback (includes how well people are meeting their training objectives)
2. offering meaningful training content
3. Identifying any prerequisites that trainees need to complete the program successfully
4. allowing trainees to learn through observation and experience
5. ensuring that the work environment, including managers and peers, support learning and use of skills on the job.
Based on this, create a training program design that you feel would work best by combining everything above and content in chapter 4.
In a memo to me with the title Propose Training Program for (Name of Your Business)
You should complete the following:
1. For reference, restate the name of the business and what they do.
2. For reference, identify the following for the department or organization interviewed. Include the following. If they were not stated and you can’t figure them out, say this.
a) Mission
b) Vision
c) Goals
3. Next analyze using the interviewee's answers but also your own critical analysis of the:
a) Internal/external strengths
b) Internal/external weaknesses
The weaknesses are key because the interviewee may not see them as important enough to have a training program designed to help them overcome the weaknesses. However, this is something you may see now.
Next, answer the following questions:
4. What type of training do you propose and why?
5. What model of learning and transfer in figure 4.1 will you use: Generalization and/or Maintenance? Explain why.
6. Using table 4.1, what type of learning outcomes will you use and why?
7. On pages 161-173, there are learning theories presented. Read over them and choose which would be best for your training. Explain why. You might combine theories if applicable.
8. In Table 4.4 it shows the Relationship Among Learning Processes, Instructional Events and Forms of Instruction. Using this table and the pages covering that in the text, which process of learning would be best for your training?
9. On pages 177-178, learning objectives are described. Write at least two learning objectives that would be best for your training.
10. Then on pages 178, what content would be most meaningful for your training? Give at least three activities/topics that you would use. These should match everything above.
We will stop there because that is a lot. Next you should be thinking of how you will measure the outcomes of the training.
