Module 5 Project – DNS Design and Testing

Background

ACME Widgets is a multinational corporation with several divisions. ACME clients include U.S. and international manufacturers and some US military contractors. ACME Widgets hired you as a consultant to design the Active Directory logical diagram.

ACME Corporate structure:

· ACME Navigation - the largest division, is involved in design and manufacture of electronic components used in navigation and guidance systems.

· ACME IC– this division’s mission is to design and manufacture custom IC (integrated circuits) and specialty chips as a subcontractor to OEMs.

· ACME Software – this division provided outsourcing software development services.

ACME logical framework

ACME Widgets corporate entity has been setup as a forest root domain. The name Acme-widgets.biz was registered as an external DNS name. All internal divisions have been setup as child domains of the Forest Root domain Acme-widgets.biz

Current OU design for Acme Widgets domain is as follows.

Project Deliverables

ACME Widgets has decided to reorganize its corporate structure. It split up the ACME Navigation into 2 separate division. ACME Navigation and ACME Defense.

· ACME Navigation will continue to deal with the civilian navigation electronics.

· ACME Defense will concentrate on designing and building guidance systems for the military market.

Complete the following project objectives.

1. Update the Active Directory domains Visio diagram to include the new ACME-Defense domain as a child domain of ACME-Navigation domain. Properly label all domains. Save the Visio diagram as a JPG image.

a. Label the ACME-Defense domain using correct FQDN.

2. ACME Defense Domain will host a DNS server responsible for ACME-Defense primary forward lookup zone. The same server will also host a secondary forward lookup zone for ACME-Navigation. How would you test to make sure that DNS server responsible for ACME-Defense primary zone is operating correctly and is correctly updating the ACME-Navigation secondary zone? List at least 4 unique tests.

a. Describe each testing step and list the actual command you would use to perform the required test.

b. Explain the expected outcome of each test.

c. Describe what each test results indicate.

For example Ping IP address of the DNS server from a single DNS client computer in the ACME-Defense domain	Ping command will return successful echo response.	This test proves that the server computer with DNS role is connected to the network
