Module5Mini-Emotion.docx

Note the following expectations:

1. You are expected to  refer to your course material in your posts.

2. In-text citations and references must be in  APA 7th edition format. In-text citations must include  page numbers, if available.

3. Direct quotes are not allowed.

4. The initial posts should

a. be  200-250 (+/- 10%) words (excluding the data),

b. include  raw data, some comments to provide  context (any information relevant for understanding your data such as participants’ demographic information and their comments), and  interpretation of your data based on the readings.

c. not include the answers to the “key questions.” (These answers should be based on the whole group’s data, and, therefore, they could only be provided in a response post.)

Module 5 Mini-Research Activity

Complete the following activity.

1. Find a volunteer participant. Explain to the participant that you will be reading to them a list of words only once. Then they will have to count backwards from 21 to 0 by threes (21, 18, 15, etc.). Then you will give them a piece of paper containing several words and the participant will be asked to circle the ones that were on the original list.

2. Once the participant has agreed, read the following list at the rate of about one word a second:

Fury, annoyance, anger, irritation, frustration, impatience, displeasure, rage.

3. Next ask the participant to count backwards from 21 to 0 by threes (give the example of 21, 18, 15, and so on).

4. When the participant has reached 0, hand the participant a piece of paper with the following words on it (printed or typed clearly in a column) and ask the participant to circle all the ones which she or he believed were on the original list you read.

· Frustration

· Birthday

· Ferocity

· Rage

· Anger

· Disapproval

· Annoyance

· Fury

· Cooperation

· Violence

· Irritation

· Displeasure

· Aggressiveness

· Success

· Party

· Impatience

5. Thank the participant and retrieve the list so you can examine the circled words.

6. There are three kinds of words on the recall list: original words that you read to the participant (8 of them), mood matches that are emotionally similar but that were not on the original list (4 of them), and mood opposites that were not on the original list and did not match the emotion of the other words (4 of them). Here is the list with each type of word labeled:

Frustration

Mood Opposite

Ferocity

Rage

Disapproval

Annoyance

7. Answer the following three questions by examining the list of recognized words.

a. How many Original words were circled? These represent true or accurate memory.

b. How many Mood Match words were circled? These represent a false memory – they were never in the list, the participant thought they were.

c. How many Mood Opposite words were circled? These words are so emotionally distinct, that it would be surprising if too many of them were circled.

Key Questions

This research activity will help you answer the following questions which will be helpful as you study for the final exam. You may also want to consult Section 5.2 in this module labeled  Experimental Findings at Laurentian to see some similar research.

1. Can you claim that you have created a "false memory?" In what way is this experiment similar to the creation of false memories?

2. Why would Mood Opposite words be selected so seldom? What do you think is guiding memory in this task?

3. Can you describe the location of the Original and Mood Matched words in terms of the dimensional model of emotion, using Pleasantness and Activation as dimensions?
