Module 4: Overview, Readings, and Tasks
In our work for this module, we will find that the concept of time is explored in a variety of manners by artists today. The concept of time is, of course, an abstract one that lends itself to a variety of understandings. This issue is addressed by author Cecil Helman in his article, "Cultural Aspects of Time and Ageing," an online article assigned for this module. In this article, Helman discusses several different forms of what he describes as "social time." Roberston and McDaniel, in our textbook, emphasize that understandings of time are influenced by one's historical time and cultural points of reference. In this latter regard, Robertson and McDaniel make particular effort to note how understandings of time vary widely among and even within cultures. As we proceed through our work for this module, we will find an abundant and diverse array of works of art and artists that explore "time" in provocative and exciting ways.
