Module 4: Language and Power    In this module, we will consider the relationship between language and power on a smaller scale than 

we did in module 2. We will look at the role that language plays in power dynamics within a country, a  group of people, or even on an individual basis.   

  Your major composition will be a paper, and you will have choices as to which kind of paper you want

  Major Composition: Paper about language and power (20% of final grade)  Your will need to write a paper of 3-5 pages around the theme of “language and power”. Here are  some options:    -Analyze a scene from a TV series, web series, or film. How do language and power interact in the  scene?  -Analyze the role of language as it relates to power in the plot of an entire TV series or film.  -Analyze a powerful speech, either from history or a fictional source. From where does the speech  derive its power? What makes the speech powerful, in terms of language?    *These kinds of papers only require one source (the text being analyzed), although you are free to use  more.    -Write a paper about the relationship between different dialects that coexist in a city or country, and  the relative power of the groups that speak them.   -Write a paper about a political/ historical figure, and how they used language to achieve their goals    *Papers like this should have at least 3 sources      ⋄ ​I am very open to your ideas! If you have an idea of a different kind of paper you’d like to write,  please let me know and I will try to work with you on developing your idea.    ⋄ (One exception to above 😁) ​You may NOT write anything related to the role of English in the  world, as this was the focus on module 2.
