ISTC2025 – Computer Based Training/Distance Learning Module 3 – Design Process

Introduction:

This activity introduces you to what is needed to design e-learning educational and training materials. This process includes assessment & analysis, planning, designing, learning theories, and lesson/training plans.

Objectives:

1. Develop a sample needs assessment tool following appropriate design guidelines.

2. Evaluate the knowledge and skills necessary to complete technology training for a simple task.

3. Write objectives following the guidelines provided.

4. Locate helpful websites for topics covered in this module.

5. Write a sample lesson plan using guidelines provided.

Outline:

Design Process

Assessment and Analysis Planning

Designing Learning Theory

Training/Lessons Plans

Implementation and Evaluation (in next module) Software Analysis – see software analysis guideline

Readings:

1. Read Chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9 in the Simonson et al textbook.

2. Read chapters 2, 3, and 9 in Beisse book

3. Read these articles – located in this module: NADA document.

Saxena, M. (2011). Learner Analysis Framework for Globalized E-Learning: A Case Study.

Optional Resource:

Here is a site covering most of the topics for instructional design http://www.instructionaldesign.org/index.html

Activity:

Assessment and Analysis

1. Review these videos on the Design Process:

Analysis Phase http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZdv5lrJs4U

Design Phase http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhLIiF9QyTo Development Phase http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzYDNWhQWYA Implementation Phase http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8yky6-P1Uw Evaluation Phase http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBoI0wBo4vw

Read this short article: http://www.trainingindustry.com/wiki/entries/addie-model.aspx

2. Assessment of what your learners know and what skills they have is critical to effective delivery of instructional/training materials. For this activity you will use the assessment discussion forum to post a sample survey that you might use to assess your learners for either the help guides (due in the next module) or for the project due at the end of the semester. I’ve posted 3 samples, now you create one and post your sample. Next, review two other samples posted by your classmates and make constructive comments on them – content, layout, length, etc.

3. Equally important to assessing your learners is completing a task analysis. Read this pdf file http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/nrcs142p2_051333.pdf OR this one https://elearningindustry.com/6-tips-conduct-successful-task-analysis- corporate-elearning

a. Select the links below. Look around 2 of the sites and complete one of the lessons on each site.

http://www.sc.edu/beaufort/library/pages/bones/bones.shtml http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/tutorial/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfXdejDvNviqilmJ9DvGuow http://www.gcflearnfree.org/topics/

b. Complete the following table answering these questions:

What would you need to know to be able to complete any of these activities? What do you think are the objectives of the program?

Who is the target audience?

What types of materials can be taught best using that approach? Content Assessment:

Activity 2

Now, using what you learned, make a list of the assumptions you are making about your learners regarding your module (skills and knowledge they have regarding your topic area)

Make a list of knowledge/functions they need to learn to complete the task for which you are developing the module.

Submit this through the assignment feature.

Planning and Designing

4. Learner centered objectives help guide your development of the learning/training materials including how it should be presented (lessons, activities, assessment, etc).

a. Review the document in BB – Objectives Specification Tool.

b. Begin to think about your help guide. Share your help guide topic and 3 objectives with your classmates in the discussion forum.

c. Provide comments to 2 of your classmates objectives in the discussion forum.

5. Lesson Plans provide the teacher or trainer with directions on what needs to be done, how the objectives fit with the activities and measurement of learning.

a. Search the Internet for a lesson plan template. Provide that link in the discussion forum. Why would you trust this source? How helpful is this template in helping your develop a lesson plan (which will be required for the project)?

b. Use the course template provided in Bb and develop a lesson for some aspect of technology. See the sample provided in BB. Submit it through the assignment feature.
