Evidence-Based Project, Part 4: Critical Appraisal of Research
Hand washing
name course university
Hand washing has become vital in today’s society, especially after the emergence of COVID-19, Ebola, and SARS (Assefa, 2020).
In a clinical setting hand hygiene is essential in ensuring germs and other pathogens are not transmitted from patients to the personnel and vice versa.
Hand hygiene is needed before touching patients for example, at the beginning of shifts, on entering patient’s rooms, before contact with the patient or his/her wounds and before donning gloves.

Clinical issue of interest
Do hand washing protocols among patients and health care providers reduce the rate of hospital-acquired infections in critical care units?
Picot question
3
I developed the question by addressing each area of the format as;
I identified the population of interest as all inpatients developing hospital acquired infections.
The intervention I aim to investigate is hand washing protocol
The study will compare modern alcohol rubs or hand sanitizers to normal hand washing in reducing hospital acquired infection, morbidity, and mortality rates

APA CITATIONS
Akuoko (2019) and Singh (2020) have the highest level of evidence.
The systematic review design they use contains filtered information from numerous articles increasing its evidence.
It focuses on a particular question and gives an in-depth literature review of relevant literature
Lagaya-Aranas (2016) uses an RCT design with unfiltered information giving it medium level of evidence
Assefa (2020) uses a cross-sectional design which fails to appraise previous literature in the area and lacks filtered information giving it medium evidence
