2-1 Exercise: Frequency Tables and Histograms
17. Academy Award-Winning Male Actors. The following data shows the ages of all Academy Award-winning male actors at the time when they won the award (through 2016). Construct a frequency table for the data, using bins of 20-29, 30-39, and so on. What ages are the most common for these winners? The most common ages for these winners are between the ages 40-49.
15. Academy Award-Winning Male Actors. Exercise 17 in Section 3.1 required the construction of a frequency table for the ages of Academy-award winning male actors at the time when they won the award. Use that frequency table to construct the corresponding histogram.
Exercise 15 & 17 Step by Step Guide:
1. Type all given ages within the data provided and labeled the column “Ages”
2. Use the calculations =MAX() and =MIN() to see the maximum and minimum value of the data
3. Use those calculations to determine the bins needed to complete the frequency table
4. Take those bins and make them into a column, and labeled it “Bin”
5. Use the Data Analysis tool under the Data tab in Excel and select histogram
6. For the Input Range, choose the Ages column with the label
7. For the Bin Range, choose the Bin column with the label
8. Check off the Labels check box in order to incorporate the labels created
9. For the output range, choose a random cell to the right of the data
10. Check the Chart Output check box at the bottom
