MODULE 2MODULE 2

Requirement overview and requirement elicitation

techniques

Introduction:

Now that you have formed a high-level understanding of Requirements

Engineering (RE), Module 2 will dive into the nitty gritty of RE.

It is imperative for requirement engineers or requirements/business

analysts to develop a solid understanding of dierent level and types of

requirements, and the ability to discern dierent types of requirement and

the quality of requirements and requirement statements. Adopting

consistent meanings for dierent types of requirements can eectively

avoid unnecessary confusion, ambiguity and debate in the course of an IT

project. This module will examine a few requirement taxonomies, that is,

dierent views on how requirements can be classied; it will then introduce

you to the denitions and descriptions of requirement types, including, for

example,

Business requirements;

Functional requirements;

Non-functional requirements;

Product requirements;

Process requirements;

Environmental requirements;

You will critically examine the characteristics of good requirements. This

serves as a foundation for subsequent modules in which you will develop

the ability to write requirement statements in a consistent, cohesive and

unambiguous way.

Once equipped with an understanding of dierent types of requirements

and the qualities of good requirements, you will then be introduced to a

range of requirement elicitation techniques. Requirement elicitation is the

process of capturing needs from various stakeholders, followed by the

requirement analysis stage which focuses on distilling and rening

stakeholders needs into formal documented requirement specications.

This Module will cover:

Module 2.1 – in the rst half of Module 2, you will learn the various types of

requirements. For example, some requirements describe what a system will

do, that is, what functionalities a system shall provide to its users. These

requirements are called functional requirement. However, other

requirements are concerned with how a system shall perform its tasks, for

example, its responsiveness, its reliability etc. These requirements are called

non-functional requirements. You will also explore the characteristics of

good requirements, which lays the foundation for requirement

documentation.

Module 2.2 – in the second half of Module 2, you will be introduced to a

number of requirement elicitation techniques. Requirement elicitation

involves meeting with various stakeholders, probing into their needs,

recording their requests that will later, through the analysis techniques

introduced in the subsequent modules, become requirements.

This Module will help you achieve the following outcomes:

a) Evaluate methods of documenting, maintaining and measuring requirements to relate to business need.

b) Identify, select and develop requirements to maximise eectiveness in the enterprise and promote sustainable business practices.

Time Management:

Your workload expectation is 20 hours for this module.

20 hours per module (two weeks): facilitated study: 3 hours / week. Personal Study: 7 hours / week.

3 hours facilitated study consists of attending class, responding to facilitator feedback.

You are to allocate 7 hours of personal learning. This includes essential time spent on pre-reading and viewing materials, assessment progression and learning activities.

Assessment Progression:

Assessment 1 Written Assessment is due at the end of Module 2.2 (week 4).

Please refer to the assessment briefs in the assessment area for more

detail.

You can prepare for this assessment by utilising the learning resources of

this module which include readings, videos, and learning activities to

enhance your understanding of the key concepts in this module.

Student Expectation:

You are expected to have worked through the essential learning resources and activities for this module before attending the facilitated session (face to face or online session) – this enables informed discussion and full participation in learning activities.

Participate in all scheduled facilitated sessions.

This time is intended to be used by you and your learning facilitator to work through activities and engage in discussion about the module content.

These sessions provide a space for you to raise questions about the module content and seek guidance on writing your assessments.

You will review, explore and discuss more deeply the information presented in the learning resources.
