Module 2: Workflow Design & Process Mapping

Healthcare technology surrounds and supports the delivery of care, and tools are available to analyze and improve processes. Informatics assists strategic planning and the measurement of care through patient outcomes. Technology and informatics together are essential when we look at clinical performance and plan change to support the patient experience.

Changing a process to improve patient outcomes includes analyzing the current workflow design and mapping a new process. Workflow design and process maps provide a framework to guide change. A Process Map can serve as a framework for change illustrating the stakeholders involved and the decision making and consequences of those decision points. Models like Lean and Six Sigma use concepts to improve processes and target improvement in patient outcomes. Baseline data compared to data post workflow redesign reveals the impact of the implemented change. 

Journal Question:

Share a change you have experienced that supported patient safety. Describe the patient safety issue, the change that occurred, and how health information technology played a role in supporting patient safety with this change. Describe how this change supports the culture of safety.
