MODULE 1MODULE 1
Information Systems Project Life Cycle
Introduction:
Isn’t information systems development all about writing and testing
code? What role does the systems analysis and design play in the
information systems development project lifecycle? What is the role of a
system analyst? You probably started this subject with a lot of such
questions. Before diving into the nitty gritty of the tools and techniques in
systems analysis and design, this module provides an overview of system
development life cycle and the context of systems analysis and design. In
doing so, this module will answer the questions outlined above by taking

you through the journey of a typical information system development
project lifecycle.
The purpose of this module is to lay down the foundation of systems
analysis and design and to discuss a number of core concepts in this
eld. This module starts o with a discussion on what a system is, and
the important concepts about a system. You will then explore the four
fundamental phases of the system development lifecycle. This includes
the goal of each phase, the main activities that need to be performed at
each phase, and the outputs or deliverables from each phase.
We will survey a number of modern system development methodologies,
including Rapid Application Development (RAD), Joint Application
Development (JAD) and Agile methodology. This module will introduce
you to dierent types of system analysts, their roles and required skill
set.
The second half of this module looks at various sources of software as
well as a system analyst’s role as a project manager of information
systems projects. You will study the four basic project management
process groups and the most commonly used tools and techniques in
managing information system. For the most parts of this subject, you will
be asked to apply your analytical skills to analyse and model complex
subject matters, and design solutions. Please note that given the
introductory nature of this module, you will not be asked to perform
analysis or solve problems in this module.
This Module will cover:
Module 1.1 – System development environment
The denition of a system and its characteristics
System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
Modern System development methodologies
Types of system analysts
Module 1.2 – Managing information system project

Sources of software
Four processes in software development projects
Tools and techniques in software project management
This Module will help you achieve the following outcomes:
a) Identify, critically evaluate and recommend information systems solutions for ineciencies in business processes, procedures and work practices using data and process modelling techniques.
c) Demonstrate the ability to eectively analyse, design and develop information systems using Unied Modelling Language (UML) models.
Time Management:
Your workload expectation is 20 hours for this module.
12 Week Delivery:
20 hours per module (two weeks): facilitated study: 3 hours / week. Personal Study: 7 hours / week.
3 hours facilitated study consists of attending class, responding to facilitator feedback.
You are to allocate 7 hours of personal learning. This includes essential time spent on pre-reading and viewing materials, assessment progression and learning activities.
Assessment Progression:
Assessment 1 is due by the end of Module 3.1. Please read Assessment 1
Brief. The Learning Facilitator will discuss this assessment in Module 2.1.
Assessment 2 is a group assignment. One of the learning activities in this
module has been designed for you to introduce yourself to the class
which will help you to get to know other students and form groups in due
course for the second Assessment.

Class Expectation:
You are expected to have worked through the essential learning resources and activities for this module before attending the facilitated session (face to face or online session) – this enables informed discussion and full participation in learning activities.
Participate in all scheduled facilitated sessions.
This time is intended to be used by you and your learning facilitator to work through activities and engage in discussion about the module content.
These sessions provide a space for you to raise questions about the module content and seek guidance on writing your assessments.
You will review, explore and discuss more deeply the information presented in the learning resources.
