Nutrition means to nourish and encompasses the food people eat and how it enriches their lives physically, socially, and personally. (Schlenker & Gilbert, 2019). To have a completely balanced diet requires the ingestion and absorption of essential nutrients like amino acids from protein, fatty acids from fatty food, and food energy from carbohydrates, protein, and fats.
Diet can also refer to the food and drink a person consumes daily and the mental and physical circumstances connected to eating. (Bakken & Leonard, 2016).
If I were to rate my own nutritional diet, I will rate myself 4 out of 5. The reason for this is that my foods are rich in vegetables, fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fat and oil, and protein. I am a mother with three children. I am responsible for feeding myself and my family with healthy foods that are rich in a balanced diet. Such as whole grains, dairy products, vegetables, lean meats, poultry, eggs, fish, beans, yogurt, nuts, and butter just to mention a few.
I take the time to cook and prepare almost all the food I consume with my family. Buying food and pastries is only on rare occasions. I reduced the intake of sweets and junk foods to the barest minimum. By cooking my food, I have controlled and managed my calorie and nutrient intake. I can also control salt and sugar consumption to the required minimum level. I ensure breakfast, lunch, and dinner are eaten at the right time. No late-night food. These are ways I imbibed to eat and consume healthy and balanced meals.
The benefit of eating healthy is numerous which has benefited me and my family tremendously. It has boosted my immune system and I rarely fall ill. It keeps my skin, teeth, and eyes healthy; it strengthens my bones and keeps me active. It has increased my happiness and I rarely feel depressed. I also feel more alive and fuller of energy. Adequate exercise is a plus to staying healthy. I have the habit of drinking lots of water, milk, and smoothie.
However, cooking all my meals is time-consuming and stressful as I have to stay a long time in the kitchen but I have been able to save more money because it’s cheaper and healthier to cook for myself.
In conclusion, having good dietary habits and choices is important for the quality of life, health, and longevity.
